Berkeley has a long history with recycling. Rooted in the environmental movement, several organizations emerged in the 1970s to coordinate programs to salvage residents’ trash for sustainable reuse.

Learn how these organizations continue to work with the city and how you can responsibly recycle your waste. On Monday, June 22 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm, the Central library will host the City of Berkeley’s Zero Waste Division to answer your questions and show you what to do with the things you no longer want.

Looking for a creative way to start your weekend? Come to Collage Club, our biweekly drop-in arts-and-crafts hour at Central! We've got all the supplies, you just bring the inspiration. And if you don't finish what you're working on, you can take the materials home with you!

While Collage Club typically meets on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month, due to library closures on Friday, June 19 and Friday, July 3, we'll meet the following Friday in both instances: June 26 and July 10, at the same time from 4:00 to 5:00 pm on the 5th Floor of the Central Library. Our normal schedule resume on July 17 and continue thereafter.

When you submit an entry to our Fiber Mascot Contest this June, you'll receive a $5 voucher to the Friends of the Berkeley Public Library bookstore.

Here's why that's actually a great deal.

The Friends bookstore runs entirely on community donations. Books start at fifty cents. Greeting cards are a quarter. The inventory changes every day and you never know what you'll find.

Last year, the Friends donated more than $150,000 to Berkeley Public Library programs and services.

This contest is made possible with support from Berkeley Public Library Foundation. We're grateful to the Friends and the Foundation for helping make something this fun happen for our community.
