Today, on Korean War Veterans Armistice Day, we had the privilege of honoring our Korean War veterans and veterans of the Korean War era at our First Annual Korean War Veterans Day Luncheon.

The Korean War is often called the "Forgotten War," but the courage, sacrifice, and service of those who answered the call can never be forgotten. Today was about ensuring these heroes receive the recognition they have long deserved.

When I first started, a Korean War veteran shared something that has stayed with me. He told me there were many events honoring veterans from other eras, but there never seemed to be one dedicated to Korean War veterans. We made him a promise that this would change.

Sadly, he passed away at the beginning of this year and was not able to be with us today. In many ways, this luncheon was a fulfillment of that promise. His words inspired what we hope will become a lasting tradition for generations to come.

I am incredibly thankful to every volunteer who gave their time, energy, and heart to make today possible. Your dedication and compassion made this event truly special.

Thank you to the families who joined us to honor their loved ones and to those who came to remember family members who have passed. Your presence reminded us that the legacy of service extends far beyond the battlefield and lives on through generations.

To the veterans who joined us today, thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and the legacy you have left for future generations. We hope you felt the warmth, gratitude, and deep appreciation that filled the room. It was our honor to celebrate you, and we hope you know how much your service means to our community.

As we close this first annual gathering, may we remember that while history has often called it the "Forgotten War," we have a responsibility to ensure its veterans are never forgotten. Today was about keeping a promise, honoring a remarkable generation, and expressing our gratitude to those who answered our nation's call. We look forward to continuing this tradition for many years to come.

Our community has always answered the call.

First, I want to sincerely thank everyone who has donated flag display cases over the past several years. Because of your kindness, we’ve been able to present dozens of local veteran families with a meaningful keepsake during one of the hardest days of their lives.

Today, however, we are out of flag cases once again.

One of the responsibilities of our office is meeting with the families of veterans after they have passed away to help them apply for and process their VA survivor benefits. At the conclusion of those meetings, we present the family with a flag display case so they have a place to properly protect and proudly display the American flag that draped their loved one’s casket.

To many families, that folded flag becomes one of their most treasured possessions. It represents a lifetime of service, sacrifice, and love of country. Being able to present it in a display case is a small gesture that carries tremendous meaning.

Sadly, our office is currently assisting the families of an average of 6 to 8 veterans each month, and our supply simply cannot keep up with the need.

We have partnered with a local vocational school to have students build these cases. It was a wonderful program, but the cost of materials has increased significantly. Today, it costs more than $1,600 to produce just 20 cases, making it difficult for us to continue the program at that scale.

If you would like to help, one of the easiest ways is to purchase a flag case through Michaels and have it shipped directly to our office. Michaels consistently offers some of the best pricing on these cases, which is why we recommend them.

If you already have a new or gently used flag display case that you’d like to donate, we would be honored to accept it as well.

Every donated case ensures that another local veteran’s family leaves our office with a lasting tribute to their loved one’s service.

If you have any questions, know of a local business that may be interested in helping, or would like more information, please send me a message.

Thank you for helping us continue to honor those who served—and the families who continue to carry their legacy.

Due to the expected rain, the Billerica Memorial Day Ceremony scheduled for 12:00 PM has been moved indoors to Billerica Town Hall.

While the location may change, our purpose does not.

This Memorial Day, we will still come together as a community to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

Roses of Honor at Fox Hill Cemetery is still expected to take place the same day, weather permitting, as long as the rain is not coming down hard.

We thank everyone for their understanding and continued support as we pause to remember those who gave everything for our freedom.

We remember.
We honor.
We never forget.

This Memorial Day, while there will not be a parade in Billerica, the Billerica Honor Platoon has worked to create meaningful opportunities for the community to come together in remembrance and honor of our fallen heroes.

In lieu of a parade, we invite the community to take part in our Roses of Honor tribute at Fox Hill Cemetery.

Much like Wreaths Across America, this program is built around remembrance, reflection, and honoring those who gave their lives in service to our nation. Instead of wreaths, roses will be placed by hand at the graves of our fallen veterans—each one representing a life remembered, a sacrifice honored, and a story that will never be forgotten.

Following the placement of roses, attendees will gather for a Procession of Honor led by the Billerica Police Department to the Memorial Day Ceremony.

Memorial Day Graveside Services

On Sunday, May 24, our community will come together to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the United States of America.

As we approach the 250th anniversary of our nation, we pause to reflect on the generations of Americans who stood in defense of freedom — from the earliest days of the Revolutionary War to the service members of today.

Please join us for Memorial Day Graveside Services beginning at 10:00 AM at VFW Eggo Post located at 775 Boston Road.

From there, we will visit the following locations:

• Korean War Memorial
• Concord Road Cemetery
• Vietnam Veterans Park
• VFW Solomon Park
• Burying Ground
• Old North Cemetery
• Fox Hill Cemetery

These ceremonies serve as a reminder that freedom has never been free, and that the sacrifices of our fallen heroes will never be forgotten.

We encourage all members of the community to attend and help us honor those who gave everything for our country.
