The American Red Cross has a shelter open at McGee Park where residents can expect a safe haven, compassionate volunteers, a hub for resources, and genuine care. We are here so that no one faces this uncertain time alone.
Here are a few helpful details about the McGee Park shelter:
▪️We are welcoming household pets. We have crates for pets, currently have lots of furry family members staying with us.
▪️Meal times are lunch from 11:30am-1pm, and dinner 5:30-7pm. With snacks and water available around the clock.
▪️Medical Reserve Corp is at the shelter providing first aid and support for other medical issues
▪️There are helpful donations pouring into the shelter for those who lost everything, and United Way is helping collect clothing, and other items. Local residents can call 211. United Way will help them, and there are more resources on the way.
Red Cross emergency shelters are a safe place and act as a hub for help. Anyone who has been affected is welcome to stop by for a hot meal, to charge their phone and get other support. We don’t ask for identification, and you don’t have to stay overnight.
▪️If possible, bring prescription medications, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies, other comfort items and important documents with you. Don’t forget any special items for family members, pets or children, such as diapers, formula and toys.
▪️When you arrive at a Red Cross shelter, you’ll be asked to register and provide some basic information, along with any specific needs you may have during your stay.
▪️Next, you’ll be assigned a specific cot location, learn about mealtimes and other available services or rules. If you have a pet or service animal, we’ll help you to get them situated as comfortably as possible.
▪️Everyone is welcome in our shelters, regardless of race, ethnicity, age, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability or citizenship status. All disaster assistance is free.
▪️Our volunteers strive to treat everyone who comes to us with dignity and respect. We help people of all ages with a wide range of concerns, including disabilities, access or mobility needs, and mental and chronic health issues.
We care about your safety and want to make your stay as comfortable as possible, given the circumstances. We ask everyone coming into our shelters to sign in and out as this helps us make sure we have enough food and support available. When you first register at a shelter, a volunteer will explain the rules, which include:
Treating everyone with respect.
Watching your children.
Caring for your pets.
Washing your hands.
Throwing away your trash.
To maintain a safe and welcoming environment for everyone, alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs and weapons (including concealed weapons) are not allowed. Smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes and other smoking devices, is only allowed outside the shelter in designated smoking areas. Negative or hurtful behaviors, stealing, destroying property or bad language will not be tolerated.
