Over the past two weekends, Tri-State Mutual Aid Association, with additional instructors from Chattanooga Fire Department and Cleveland Fire Department, hosted an intensive Swiftwater Rescue Technician course on the Hiwassee River.

Fannin County Fire was represented by William Reed and Dale Stiles, both members of the Fannin County Swiftwater Rescue Team. Although already certified Swiftwater Technicians, they attended the course to learn new techniques, refine existing skills, and bring additional knowledge back to Fannin County to better serve our citizens and visitors.

Participants practiced advanced rescue techniques, victim recovery, boat operations, rope systems, and other critical skills used during flood and swiftwater emergencies.

Continuous training is essential to maintaining a highly capable rescue team. We appreciate Tri-State Mutual Aid Association and instructors for providing this valuable opportunity to train alongside rescuers from across the region.

This week we recognize and celebrate EMS Week and the dedicated men and women who answer the call day and night, often during some of the worst moments in a person’s life.

EMS is more than lights and sirens. It’s long shifts, missed holidays, difficult decisions, calm voices in stressful situations, and a commitment to serving others no matter the weather, time, or circumstances.

Thank you to our paramedics, EMTs, dispatchers, firefighters, first responders, and all of the healthcare professionals who work together to make a difference in our community every day.

Please join us in taking a moment this week to thank the EMS professionals who continue to serve Fannin County and communities everywhere.

🚑 Happy EMS Week 🚑

Fannin County EMA and Fannin County Fire Department would like to thank Tri-State Mutual Aid, Georgia DNR, Georgia DNR Aviation, Murray County Rescue Squad, Polk County EMA, West Polk Fire Department, Wolf Creek Fire Department, and all responding personnel who came together to assist with a difficult and extended rescue operation in the Rough Ridge Trail, Beech Bottom Trail, and Jacks River Trail area. This operation highlighted the importance of strong interagency cooperation and the willingness of neighboring agencies to respond when help is needed in some of the most challenging terrain in our region.

The initial call came into Fannin County 911 at approximately 2:30 p.m. for an injured hiker in a very remote area of the Cohutta Wilderness. Many of these trails are extremely difficult to access, with multiple creek crossings, washouts, and sections that are no longer maintained. Rescuers reached the patient at approximately 7:29 p.m. Due to the patient’s condition and the remote location, command made the decision to utilize Georgia DNR Aviation, who pre staged a helicopter and crew at a nearby clearing, to long-line the patient from deep within the forest to a staged medical unit from Polk County EMS. The patient was successfully extracted and transferred to EMS care at approximately 8:03 p.m.

All emergency personnel made it safely out of the woods and were back in service by approximately 11:00 p.m.

This was a long and physically demanding operation, and we are extremely grateful for the teamwork, professionalism, and dedication shown by everyone involved in bringing this incident to a successful conclusion.

Special thanks to Murray County Rescue Squad for the video.

On Saturday, May 16, the Lake Blue Ridge Civic Association (LBRCA), alongside the Fannin County Board of Commissioners, Fannin County Public Works, Fannin County Emergency Management Agency, Fannin County Fire Department, Georgia DNR and GOCO Dumpsters came together for a major cleanup project on Lake Blue Ridge.

Crews filled three 40-foot dumpsters with debris removed from the lake, including condemned docks, floating trash, a half-sunken ski jump, and remnants of a burned houseboat. Public Works utilized heavy equipment while firefighters and volunteers worked together to remove debris from the water.

Fannin County would like to especially thank the Lake Blue Ridge Civic Association for organizing the cleanup and for their continued stewardship of Lake Blue Ridge.
