The Regional Environmental Office of Long Island has many conservation projects that help to preserve our beautiful natural envir

onment. These projects range from monitoring and protecting endangered species in our area to removing invasive ones that threaten the biodiversity of our native habitats. We are also the headquarters for the environmental programs offered at various state parks in the Long Island region. An environmental educator will guide you backwards in time as you learn about the origins of flowering plants, conifers, ferns, and mosses.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation – Long Island Region will be hosting a signature Celebration Event over Memorial Day Weekend at Jones Beach to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence!
As part of this celebration, a historical village of local re-enactors will be showcased over the holiday weekend. The performers will demonstrate various events in history and illustrate the way of life in 1776. The event will also feature a rolling exhibit highlighting Long Island’s role in the Revolutionary War.

Re-enactment Village – located at Parking Field 3.5 (grass field between Parking Field 3 & 4):
• 5th New York Regiment
• 1st Rhode Island Regiment
• Reenactment Play featuring four New Yorkers who signed the Declaration of Independence: skit to feature William Floyd, Francis Lewis, Philip Livingston, and Lewis Morris
• Dramatic Reading of The Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson
• Shinnecock Cultural Display
• Reenactors on Horseback: George Washington, Benjamin Tallmadge, and Dragoon officer Stephen Moylan all on horseback
• Additional reenactors: portraying James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, and Benjamin Franklin
• Fife and Drum band
