The New York Times Editorial Board just made the case for something we’ve been saying for years: if we want more affordable homes, we need to make it legal to build them.
Massachusetts has an opportunity to do exactly that.

The Legalize Starter Homes ballot initiative would make it easier to build homes on smaller lots, helping create more housing options for first-time homebuyers, families, and older adults looking to downsize.

The challenge? We need 12,500 more signatures by June 12 to get this measure on the November ballot.

That’s why we’re organizing a statewide Weekend of Action on June 6 & 7 to collect signatures and bring this campaign across the finish line.

🏠 More homes.
🏠 More housing choices.
🏠 More opportunities to stay in the communities we love.

Right now, outdated one-size-fits-all parking mandates are driving up housing costs, wasting valuable land, and blocking new homes from being built.

This isn’t about banning parking. It’s about flexibility.
Do we really need more empty asphalt? Or more homes, local businesses, trees, and people-friendly neighborhoods?

On June 4, the Boston City Council will hold a hearing on eliminating parking minimums for new residential development. Show up, submit testimony, and make your voice heard.

Boston says it wants more housing. So why are backyard homes still effectively banned in much of the city?

ADUs, small backyard homes, garage apartments, and in-law suites, are one of the easiest ways to create more homes, help families stay together, and give homeowners added flexibility.
While basement ADUs are currently allowed by-right, new detached or backyard ADUs are still not broadly legal citywide outside of Mattapan.

Mayor Wu promised action on ADUs over 3 years ago. Boston residents are still waiting. It’s time to deliver.
Massachusetts already legalized ADUs by-right statewide. Boston needs to catch up.

Join us in urging the City of Boston to legalize detached ADUs by-right citywide. Add your name to the letter today. Link in Bio

We’re excited to announce an incredible lineup of special guest speakers for AHMA’s Lobby Day at the Massachusetts State House on May 27th.

Joining us will be:
• Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll
• Representative Andy Vargas
• Senator Brendan Crighton
• David Modica, whose viral Marblehead Town Meeting remarks sparked a statewide conversation about exclusionary zoning and housing reform.

Together, these leaders and advocates will help kick off a day focused on advancing housing solutions, meeting directly with legislators, and building momentum for a more affordable and inclusive Massachusetts.

Housing affordability impacts every corner of the Commonwealth — and advocacy matters. Lobby Day is an opportunity for residents, organizers, and policymakers to come together and push for meaningful action.
