Incident Report: Vehicle Rollover

At approximately 8:45 a.m. this morning, the Butler/Wilmington Fire Territory was dispatched to the intersection of County Road 61A and County Road 24 for a reported passenger vehicle rollover off the roadway with possible patient entrapment.

On-duty personnel promptly responded with Quint 39 and Command 30. Crews requested a callback page for additional manpower to staff the station while the initial crew remained committed to the crash scene.

While en route, crews were advised that the patient had been removed from the vehicle by passing motorists.

Upon arrival, crews found a passenger vehicle off the roadway and on its roof with heavy damage. A nearby power pole had also been broken off as a result of the crash.

Firefighters provided medical care to the patient until the arrival of Parkview EMS. Once the patient was transferred to EMS personnel, fire crews transitioned to securing the vehicle and assisting with scene safety.

While crews were still operating on the rollover incident, additional personnel responded to an odor investigation at approximately 9:11 a.m.

The rollover scene was subsequently turned over to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, towing personnel, and the power company. All fire units returned to service shortly after 9:30 a.m.

There were no reported injuries to fire personnel.

Incident Report: Industrial Fire

At approximately 11:28 p.m., the Butler/Wilmington Fire Territory was dispatched to the 4200 block of County Road 61 for a possible industrial fire involving a machine and pit. Due to the nature of the call, the DeKalb County Central Communications Center immediately activated the department’s industrial mutual aid alarm.

Crews responded quickly and arrived to find a large industrial facility with heavy smoke showing. On-site personnel reported a machine and pit with heavy fire involvement.

Mutual aid companies began arriving shortly after and assisted with stretching hose lines into the facility to initiate fire attack. Crews quickly extinguished all visible fire and applied foam concentrate to assist with fire suppression. The fire was subsequently brought under control.

Multiple fire agencies remained on scene until approximately 2:45 a.m. to cool the affected area and ventilate the facility. The Angola Fire Department stood by at Butler’s station to handle any additional calls or provide additional support if needed on scene.

No injuries were reported. All fire units were clear and back in service at approximately 3:45 a.m.

The Butler/Wilmington Fire Territory would like to thank all of the mutual aid departments who assisted, including Concord Township Fire Department, City of Auburn Fire Department, Edgerton Fire Department, Waterloo Fire Department, Hamilton Fire Department, Ashley Fire Department, and Angola Fire Department.

Incident Report: Industrial Fire

On Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at approximately 2:12 p.m., the Butler/Wilmington Fire Territory was dispatched to the 600 block of RE Jones Road for a manual pull fire alarm activation at an industrial facility. On-duty crews quickly responded with Engine 33 and Quint 39.

While en route, crews were updated by the DeKalb County Central Communications Center that a 911 call had been received reporting a fire involving a dust collection system. In response, Engine 33 requested the department’s pre-established first-alarm mutual aid response, which included the Concord Township, Auburn, Waterloo, Hamilton, and Edgerton Fire Departments.

Upon arrival, crews found a large industrial facility with nothing showing from the exterior and an evacuation in progress. Additional apparatus arrived on scene to assist, including Rescue 31 and Fire 31. Two Butler City Police units also responded to determine whether assistance was needed in any capacity.

Fire crews located the affected area and worked alongside facility maintenance personnel to assess the situation. The fire was determined to be contained and under control, allowing all mutual aid companies to be released, with the exception of the Waterloo Fire Department. Waterloo personnel remained at the Butler station to provide coverage for any additional calls while Butler/Wilmington crews remained on scene.

Crews continued to monitor the situation and ensure conditions remained under control before returning to service shortly after 3:00 p.m.

There were no reported injuries.

Notice: Interdepartmental Training

This morning, on-duty crews from the Butler/Wilmington Fire Department traveled to the Auburn Fire Department Training Facility for a day of interdepartmental training.

Crews departed Butler around 8:15 a.m. and worked alongside Auburn firefighters through several different scenarios designed to identify potential flaws, improve communication, and find ways to increase efficiency when operating together on an emergency scene.

While our on-duty crews were training, additional Butler/Wilmington employees remained at the station to ensure the city continued to have fire protection and emergency coverage. Crews returned to Butler around 1:00 p.m. and relieved those employees.

The Butler/Wilmington and Auburn Fire Departments have a county mutual aid agreement for confirmed structure fires, making opportunities like this extremely important. When the call comes in, our crews may be working side by side in a high stress environment. Training together beforehand allows us to become more familiar with each other’s operations, communication, equipment, and capabilities.

The goal is simple: identify problems in training so we can perform better when it matters most.

🚨 Training Spotlight 🚨

Our on-duty personnel have spent the week sharpening their rural firefighting skills by training on portable water tank drafting operations and establishing reliable water supplies for fire suppression.

One of this week’s primary objectives has been arriving on scene, deploying a portable water tank, and establishing a continuous water supply within minutes. In many of our rural response areas where fire hydrants aren’t available, establishing a dependable water supply is one of the most critical factors in a successful fire attack.

These repetitive drills build muscle memory, strengthen communication, and ensure our crews can operate safely and efficiently when every second counts. Continuous training like this helps us provide the highest level of service to the residents and visitors of the Butler/Wilmington Fire Territory.

Incident Report: Field Fire

On July 7, at approximately 1:50 p.m., the Butler/Wilmington Fire Territory was dispatched to the 7800 block of County Road 18 for a reported 50-acre field fire.

On-duty crews responded immediately. Due to the size of the reported incident, additional volunteer personnel were recalled to respond with Tanker 35 and Grass Rig 37. While en route, responding crews observed heavy smoke visible from the city limits. Based on the visible fire conditions, additional mutual aid resources were requested from the Edgerton and Hamilton Fire Departments.

Engine 33 and Brush 38 were the first units to arrive on scene and reported approximately 30 acres of cut wheat actively burning. Crews immediately initiated an aggressive fire attack on the head of the fire, successfully bringing the incident under control in a short amount of time with the assistance of all responding agencies.

Due to the rural location and size of the incident, the Concord Township Fire Department was requested to provide station coverage at the Butler/Wilmington Fire station to ensure continued emergency response capability within the community.

By approximately 2:27 p.m., the fire was declared under control, all mutual aid resources were released, and responding units returned to service. There were no reported injuries.

The Butler/Wilmington Fire Territory would like to thank the Edgerton Fire Department, Hamilton Fire Department, Concord Township Fire Department, the City of Butler Police Department, and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department for their assistance, and continued partnership in serving our communities. Their teamwork and support were instrumental in the safe and successful resolution of this incident.

Extreme heat can pose serious health risks to anyone spending time outdoors. As temperatures continue to rise, take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and those around you.

💧 Drink plenty of water.
🧢 Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
☀️ Limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Check on older adults, children, neighbors, and pets.
🚗 Never leave children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.

Know the signs of heat-related illness, and call 911 immediately if someone is experiencing a medical emergency.
