Lima beans are at their peak right now in Delaware! Our state grows more lima beans for processing (like freezing and canning) than anywhere else in the nation, making them a signature crop for local farmers.

Visit nearby farm stands and farmers markets to pick up fresh lima beans this season. And if you’d like to enjoy them year‑round, simply shell the beans and freeze them to keep them at their best!

Step back in time with this 1923 photograph of squash piled in the yard of H.P. Cannon and Son’s cannery in Bridgeville.

The company’s story began in 1881, when Henry P. Cannon (1847–1929) and his brother, Philip L. Cannon, opened a cannery near the Bridgeville Station. While Philip eventually left the business, Henry continued the operation, canning a variety of Delaware-grown crops, including asparagus, peas, string beans, squash, pumpkin and tomatoes.

For nearly a century, H.P. Cannon and Son was part of Delaware’s agricultural and food-processing heritage before closing in 1981 - its 100th anniversary year.

Today, historic images like this offer a fascinating glimpse into Delaware’s agricultural past and the longstanding connection between our farms and food industry.

Today, we're celebrating some of agriculture's hardest-working four-legged helpers.

From farm dogs that help move livestock and keep watch over the farm, to loyal companions who spend their days alongside farmers, dogs have an important place in agricultural life. They may not always get a paycheck, but they earn plenty of treats, belly rubs and a well-deserved spot by the barn!

Here’s to the dogs who work hard, stay loyal and make farm life a little better every day. Happy National Dog Day!

Corn season is at its peak in Delaware!

There’s nothing quite like sweet, fresh Delaware corn, especially when it’s picked at the height of the season. Whether you’re grilling it, boiling it, adding it to a summer salad, or enjoying it straight off the cob, now is the time to bring some home.

And Delaware has been celebrating great corn for generations! This photo from the Delaware State Archives shows 10 ears of championship Johnson Country white corn, grown by Fred Trimble of Hockessin and exhibited at the 1923 State Corn Show in Dover. More than 100 years later, Delaware growers are still producing some pretty impressive ears. 🌽

After a Storm: Check Your Farm

If your farm or agricultural operation is affected by severe weather, take time afterwards to safely assess your property and check on your animals.

Check livestock and poultry: Make sure all animals are accounted for and that fences, gates, shelters and pens are secure.

Watch for hazards: Stay away from downed power lines and damaged or unstable structures. Contact the appropriate utility or emergency personnel when needed.

Inspect farm buildings and equipment: Look for damage to barns, sheds, greenhouses, equipment and other structures before entering or using them.

Check water systems: If you lost power, make sure wells, pumps and livestock waterers are operating properly.

Document damage: When it is safe to do so, photograph damage and keep records of repairs and losses for your insurance and other potential assistance needs.

Check your fencing: Storm-damaged fencing can allow livestock to get loose. Make repairs as soon as it is safe to do so.

Above all, put safety first. Storm debris, damaged structures, downed trees and power lines can create dangerous conditions even after the weather has passed.

If your agricultural operation sustained damage, please continue to monitor information from state and local emergency management agencies for available resources and assistance.
