The best time to plant a tree is at our doorstep! Planting in fall gives trees time to develop their roots before going dormant in the winter, without having to worry about the harsh summer sun. Why not give a beautiful new tree a try to end 2023.

This past Wednesday Urban Forester, Taryn Davidson, and Urban Associate, Marcuss McClenton, assisted Senators Community in Lewes with their 2023 tree planting. This community was awarded funds through the Urban and Community Forestry's competitive grant program to plant 25 trees within their neighborhood. Fifteen community members and three tree stewards came together to plant Willow Oaks, Redbuds, Maples and River Birch.

We would like to thank Andy Ney, Redden State Forest staff member, for auguring the holes. This helped make the planting process seamless.

This time of the year you may notice leaf scorch on trees. Leaf scorch is a condition that occurs when tree leaves show browning, wilting, and marginal leaf death, often creating a scorched appearance. This phenomenon is prevalent during hot, dry periods or when trees experience water stress. Leaf scorch is typically a result of a mismatch between a tree's water uptake and its water loss through transpiration. During periods of intense heat and limited water availability, trees may struggle to maintain a proper water balance, leading to leaf dehydration and damage. While leaf scorch can be concerning to observe, it's essential to recognize that it may not be a sign of a severe underlying problem. Many well-established trees can endure temporary leaf scorch without significant harm.
