Do your part to keep wild turtles wild! As the weather warms, we will continue to see turtles basking in the sun, or even moving to their summer ponds. We will also see hatchling Eastern Painted turtles emerging from the nest they overwintered in. ⁣

If you come across a hatchling just emerging from their nest, bringing them directly to the closest pond's edge is the BEST way to help them. Do not take them home to keep as pets. They deserve their birth right of living free. ⁣

If you are concerned that the hatchling cannot survive on its own for ANY reason, you should call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for help! There are no instances where a wild hatchling should be held back from nature and not be examined by a wildlife rehabber. ⁣

Above all, remember that nature is NOT a free pet store. ⁣

PS: You can find help with any native turtle situation by visiting our website. The link is in our bio! ⁣

DON'T FORGET!!! 2021 dog licenses expire on April 1st, 2022. If you no longer have a dog you licensed in 2021 please call the Town Clerk's office (781)821-5013 so they can remove you from the list. If you still have your dog and you haven't renewed now is the time to do it. Mass General Laws and Town of Canton by-laws require that all dogs over the age of 6 months be licensed and that license must be renewed annually. The cost of a license is $15 for a dog that is spayed/neutered and $20 if the dog is intact. A current rabies vaccine is also required. If you don’t renew your license by May 30th (that’s a pretty generous grace period) a $50 fine will be assessed. Most dogs we’ve asked seem to think it’s silly to waste that $50 and would prefer you spent it on toys and treats.

Meet Nelly!! (AKA: Potato, Blueberry, Peanut Butter Cup, Chunky Butt, Cupcake, Chanel and everything else she’s been nicknamed)
First things first… She’s gorgeous and she’s about 8 yrs old. She loves short walks, sitting in the sun, curling up on her bed in the office, and being near her favorite humans. She’s been with us since December. Why so long? She had a pretty significant back injury when she came to us. We’re not sure what happened but when we first met her she could barely walk. It was tough to watch her try to drag herself around. Thanks to top notch care at Canton Veterinary Hospital she has come a long way. Her back end and her front end don’t always agree on how to move but she moves. She has made incredible progress. She’s sweet, laid back, and gentle. She doesn’t bother our office cats and has been wonderful with all of the dogs and people she has met here. She is probably not a good fit for a home with a high energy dog because she can’t match that energy. If you’re looking for a new best friend who mostly just wants to sit around she is your girl.

If you are interested in finding out more about her please call us at (781)575–6507.

These photos show her in December, February and today. Check the comments for video of her out and about.

There’s something fishy going on here. We lured you in with the ol’ bait and switch!

2021 dog licenses expire on April 1st. Canton has a very generous grace period but if you don’t renew your license by May 30th a $50 fin will be issued. Fine, we mean fine. This is a great oppur-tuna-ty to renew before that extra fee is added. You don’t want to pay more and we don’t want to issue citations. I believe that in the bottom of my sole. Sea what I did there? The license fee is $15 if your dog is spayed/neutered and $20 for an intact dog. Renewing ASAP is your best bet so you don’t forget the deadline. You don’t have to be a brain Sturgeon to figure that out. Don’t be koi, get your dog an o-fish-al Town of Canton dog license at the Town Clerk's office today!

Our number is (781)575-6507. Let minnow if you have any questions.

Sorry, that was eely, eely bad. We tried to be funny but we understand if you think this post is a pile of carp. Oh my cod! We can’t stop…

I said-a hip, hop, the hippie, the hippie
To the hip hip hop-a you don't stop the rock
It to the bang-bang bunny, say up jump the bunny
To the rhythm of the bunny, the beat
Now what you hear is not a test: This bunny was in the street

Are you missing your hip hop? This very friendly bunny was found yesterday on Norfolk St and happily went for a ride with a kind woman who stopped to help. That woman is holding onto the rabbit for now while we attempt to locate it's owner. If that's you please call us at (781)575-6507.

Please keep an eye out in the area of First Parish Rd and Washington St for a raccoon behaving inappropriately. While most reported wildlife sightings are nothing to worry about we believe this raccoon may be sick or injured. It was last seen going into a yard on Washington St but was gone when we arrived. Use caution and do not try to approach this animal. Please call us at (781)575-6507 if you see this raccoon or any wild animal acting strangely.

We're hiring!! If you've ever dreamed up giving up some weekends and holidays to work in the sometimes fast paced world of animal control this could be your chance! Afraid of dogs and hate getting dirty? This might not be the job for you. Interested in helping people, animals, learning about all kinds of critters and up for an occasional challenge? Keep reading...

We're looking for coverage for 2-3 afternoons a week. The hours are 3-6pm with an option for some additional weekday hours. Sign up for that and we'll throw in one on-call weekend a month and a couple of holidays. Sounds great right? If weekday afternoons don't work for you we're also looking for someone who can do one on-call weekend a month and some holidays.

This job is not all fuzzy puppies and snuggles. We deal with domestic animals and wildlife. We handle rabies vector species. Somedays are sad and we go home covered in p**p. BUT....sometimes there are fuzzy puppies and snuggles! Life is all about balance.

Last week, a rare Steller’s sea eagle was spotted along the Taunton River in Massachusetts, thousands of miles away from its home in Asia. This sea eagle is one of the largest raptors in the world, weighing up to 20 pounds with a wingspan of up to 8 feet! This is likely the same eagle that was observed in Alaska and Canada, and highlighted in this Smithsonian magazine article: www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/stellers-sea-eagle-dazzles-birders-on-lone-odyssey-180979035/

Tango update! He has taken over our office, our cruiser, and our hearts. We want to be clear… He did not have an embedded coller. That assumption was made in the comments on our original post about him yesterday but it is not true. We appreciate your concern. Sometimes photos can be tough to look at and they don’t always tell the whole story. He does have hair loss, bad teeth, iffy vision and a stiff old body. Sometimes an old dog looks and acts like an old dog. It doesn’t always mean someone intentionally hurt them. He was seen by a veterinarian about 6 months ago and saw our amazing vet today. He is getting the care he needs and is entertaining us with his goofy antics. Our goal is to see him in a home but there is no urgency. He’s safe and happy with us until his medical stuff is squared away and the right person comes along. If you think you might be the one for him please call us at (781)575-6507.
