⚡ E-BIKES IN IOWA: KNOW THE LAW ⚡
The Carter Lake Police Department wants everyone to enjoy Iowa's roads and trails safely. Whether you're commuting, exercising, or just enjoying a ride, understanding Iowa's eBike laws helps keep everyone safe.
🚲 Iowa's Three eBike Classes
Class 1 eBike
✅ Pedal-assist only
✅ Motor assists up to 20 MPH
✅ Generally allowed on bike paths, multi-use trails, and public roads unless restricted by local ordinance
Class 2 eBike
✅ Pedal-assist and throttle equipped
✅ Motor assistance up to 20 MPH
✅ Typically allowed on bike paths and trails, but riders should be aware of local restrictions regarding throttle use
Class 3 eBike
✅ Pedal-assist only
✅ Motor assistance up to 28 MPH
✅ Generally allowed on roads and bike lanes but may be restricted on certain non-motorized trails and paths

Riders Under 18
✔ Helmet required by Iowa law
Minimum Age Requirements
✔ Class 2 eBikes: 14 years old
✔ Class 3 eBikes: 16 years old
Riders 18 and Older
✔ Helmets are not required but are strongly recommended
🛣️ Where Can You Ride?
eBikes are generally permitted on:
✔ Public roads
✔ Bike lanes
✔ Multi-use trails
Some trails, parks, and pathways may have additional restrictions, especially for higher-speed Class 3 eBikes. Always check posted signs and local regulations before riding.
⚙️ Motor Power & Registration
✔ Maximum motor power: 750 watts (1 horsepower)
eBikes that exceed this limit may be classified as motor vehicles and could require:
• Registration
• Licensing
• Insurance
✔ eBikes under 750 watts do not require registration or insurance in Iowa.
