in 1963, the March on Washington took place. The purpose of the march was to advocate for the civil and economic rights of African Americans. It was at this march that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. John Lewis also spoke at the event and called for protests and activism “until true freedom comes.” It is estimated that over 250,000 attended the event.

Today we celebrate Women's Equality Day!

Women's Equality Day is celebrated August 26 to commemorate the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of s*x. in 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified, which granted women the right to vote.

While the amendment did grant women the right to vote, most women of color were excluded from that right, including Black, Asian, and Native American women. It wasn’t until 1965, with the passage of the Voting Rights Act, that made the right to vote a reality for women of color.
