We've had a fantastic start to summer reading this week-- including fossils in the kids' room!

That's right: real, actual fossils are currently on display in our kids' room! These fossils are here for everyone's exploration through the month of June thanks to the Museum of Cultural & Natural History at CMU.

You can hold these fossils in your hand! Visit the library and ask at the front desk: as long as we have a staff member available, we will unlock the display and share the fossil experience with you. There is also a set of fact sheets created by the museum students for exploring the fossils even when the window is locked.

Did you know? The museum supports research and teaching in cultural and natural history and is a laboratory for Museum Studies students, and their exhibit spaces are free and open to the public! If you're near Mt Pleasant, pop over to campus Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm: the main gallery space is in Rowe 124 and the children’s hands-on gallery is in Rowe 101A. They are closed on weekends and holidays.

Our thanks to the staff & students at CMU for loaning us these fossils and making more materials for our display. We invite everyone to make these fossils a part of *your* summer story this month!

Mark your calendars for Unearthing Michilimackinac!

One month from today, on Wednesday, July 8th, at 6:00pm, Lynn Evans, Curator of Archaeology for Mackinac State Historic Parks, will be here to tell us all about archaeological activity in the Straits. She'll even be bringing tools and artifacts from Colonial Michilimackinac.

And in August, MSHP will be installing a small exhibit of artifacts that Lynn has developed for us. Because the science of unearthing stories is happening right here in our area every day, all year long.

Would you like to use your hands and make something real? Try a clay class, zine-making, or nature art this summer at the library! Teens ages 12-18 can still sign up for next week's art offerings. We will use a variety of techniques to create individual mini-books called "zines" as well as a communal project to be put up in the library. And we'll combine rocks, shells, canvas, twine, leather, and more with a variety of tools with cool projects to take home. Sign up for morning zines, afternoon nature art, or both-- with lunch in between! All at no cost.

And in July, our popular hand building with clay clad returns for everyone ages 9 & up. This intergenerational workshop-style class always fills up fast, so grab your grandma, your cousin from California, your new best friend from camp, and sign up: the cost is just $30 per person and includes everything you need.

Space also remains in Group Ukulele! These lessons last 30 minutes on Wednesdays at 11:30am and meet June 24-July 22. The instructor is CAS music educator Abby Mullis. No cost to attend!

Summer Reading has arrived!

Celebrate summer with us this week, and unearth a story at the library! Kids 6-12 are invited to paint a plaster dino at 1:00 today: no cost, while supplies last. Tomorrow at 10:15, Tuesday Storytime will introduce little ones (and the folks who bring them) to Lenny the Turtle. Wednesday at 1:00, our Open Book Club begins for all kids ages 9-12: library leaders will read aloud, then we'll do activities together!

Also on Wednesday, at 2:00, Raven Hill is here with Michigan Fossils! Every participant will get to choose, polish, and take home the fossil of their choice. This program is open to all kids ages 6 & up, as space allows. And at 11:00 on Thursday, Library LEGO club returns!

Our Summer Reading Challenge is open to everyone of any age. Read books to add your name to our community display and chances to win our raffle prizes. Visit the library to see the prizes on display and get a reading record. We also have very special dinos for reading achievements. No library card required!

It's a very special storytime this Tuesday, with special guest Lenny the Turtle!

Kids and their families are invited to the library this Tuesday, June 16th, at 10:15, for a turtle-themed storytime. Turtles were neighbors to the dinosaurs, and are neighbors to us, too! Miss Judy will be bringing her real, live turtle pal, Lenny, to meet and greet everyone.

Storytime is designed for kids ages 0-5 and the folks they bring along, incorporating a story read-aloud, songs, fingerplays, crafts, and other activities that support pre-literacy skills. Everyone is welcome: no library card or signup is required for storytime.

And while you are here, get equipped for summer reading! Pick up a reading log, and borrow books to enjoy together or read right here: our kids' room and all of our library spaces include comfy seating where everyone is welcome to relax and read. Our kids' room is full of opportunities for story exploration, from dramatic play and toy tools to Vox audiobooks, beginning readers, graphic novels, and more. Look for the best where twin dinos are hatching!

We live where folks come to get away, & the library is here to help you enjoy it-- especially this weekend, "Three Free Weekend," when locals and visitors alike are invited to fish, ride trails, and visit state parks-- for free!

Bring the kids to try fishing at the Cheboygan Children's Trail event today, June 13th, from 11:00-1:30. Community volunteers are on the trail with activities, prizes, even lunch from Kiwanis while supplies last. We will be there to share the fun with our Summer Reading Kickoff!

The library is open on weekends, too! Fishing? Cardholders can stop by to borrow fishing poles & tackle boxes. State Parks? Try one of our Explore Cheboygan backpacks. Trails? Sorry, but we do not have atv's in the Library of Things at this time. But you can use our 24/7 WiFi to download maps!

CHEBOYGAN IS FOR THE DINOSAUR DESCENDANTS: BIRDS!

Did you know? Scientists now agree: birds are direct descendants of dinosaurs. Cheboygan is a premiere spot for spotting living dinosaurs: people come from all around the country to see birds in our area. And this summer, you can even go birding right here in the library!

CHALLENGE: Find birds located throughout the library. Use these tips, which are as true for library bird hunts as finding live birds out in the wild:
1. Move slowly and quietly. You don't want to disrupt the birds' peace.
2. Keep a list. Birders keep checklists of birds they've seen and birds they hope to find someday.
You can get a library bird list to record your findings here through August. Find all the birds in the library and turn in your list at the front desk for the chance to win one of our bird-themed prizes.

On display for one more week in the library Gallery: the Cheboygan Photography Club annual Photography Show.

Our Gallery is once again filled with an array of brilliant images by local photo artists. The pieces featured were chosen, hung, and presented for us by the talented artists and members of the Cheboygan Area Photography Club.

Work by club members is regularly displayed in our building throughout the year: we rotate large framed photos depicting local scenes in our stairwell and the hallways of our lower level Center for Community Programs. The CCP is also where the photography club meets regularly. For up-to-date details (and many beautiful images!) check the club's own page.

The Cheboygan Area Photography Club 2026 Art Photography Show will be on display in our Gallery through June 16th during all our open hours. Cheboygan Area Public Library Extended open hours:

Learn from a monarch butterfly expert how to raise them-- at the library!

Two weeks from today, on Tuesday, June 23, at 6:00, local expert Heather Schupbach will be here to share her lifetime of expertise. "Anyone can raise monarchs," says Shupbach. What to plant, how eggs grow, how to attract monarchs, and more: we'll be covering it all.

Did you know? Monarch eggs can be found throughout the summer according to Schupbach. Once they hatch, monarchs in Michigan migrate to Mexico.

The program is an Earth Week Plus presentation. It is free and appropriate for all ages. It will be held in the Linda Widrig Neuss room of our lower level Center for Community Programs.
