The Northern Michigan Grief Group meets here at the library monthly, offering connection and assistance to individuals suffering a grievous loss. Don't mourn alone: contact the NoMi grief group or drop in here at the library the third Sunday of the month. The next meeting will be September 20th at 2:00.

NoMi Grief Group is just one of many organizations that meet here in our lower level Center for Community Programs. From fine art classes to 4H clubs, the studio is always busy. Our gallery is frequently home to a photography show, annual Student Art Show, community quilt shows, and t'ai chi. The Linda Widrig Neuss room hosts library programs as well as community meetings, music lessons, and business gatherings. Members of our community make use of our other spaces for club and organizational meetings, playgroups, and even workspaces.

And our Friends of the Library operate the Book Nook, our permanent used book sale, every Tuesday and Saturday from 10:30-2:00. The funds they raise help make sure all these events can happen!

Our CAPL lower level Center for Community Programs is fully accessible by elevator as well as sunlit staircase. Art can always be found on the walls. There is a full suite of restrooms and flexible seating in every space. All are welcome.

Archaeology happens right here in the Straits!
It's the last weekend of Archaeology August here at the library, and thanks to our friends at MSHP, you can still stop by to see genuine local artifacts on display!

"Unearthing a Story at Michilimackinac" is a museum exhibit designed and installed for us by Mackinac State Historic Parks. The display includes pottery samples from the Michilimackinac archaeological sites, dug from the earth beneath our feet. See genuine tools of the trade used by archaeologists right here in the Straits.

Our deepest thanks to our neighbors at MSHP, who embraced the idea of a mini exhibit at the library this summer. This year marked the 67th consecutive year of active archaeology at the parks, and they unearthed some rare finds this summer. We have loved having a corner of the parks here at the library this month!

We had a terrific time at our anniversary party this week! It was great to have Dale Rieger filling the library with song, and we sure love the sounds of a bald eagle in the building. The Lord of the Gourd graced the main level with his artistry. And it was terrific to see former director Mark Bronson, who oversaw the new building project.

Our team so enjoyed directing folks, from sending them to Director Brice scooping the ice cream downstairs to the commemorative book bags at the front desk. We got to give tours and issue new library cards!

And it was wonderful to see so many community members, retired colleagues, grown-up library kids, and friends all having fun together. Thanks for the memories-- here's to making so many more!

Today's the day!

Come on over to the library this evening, Wednesday, August 26th, 2026, from 6:00-7:30 for an old-fashioned ice cream social! Dale Rieger will be providing live music in the Neuss Room. The Lord of the Gourd will be near the front desk with amazing gourd carving demonstrations. Everyone will even have the chance to interact with a live raptor thanks to Michigan Avian Experience.

The library will be open during the party, so while you are here, consider renewing your library card, or exploring our Seed Library, our Jigsaw Puzzle Swap, and our local history & genealogy lab. Check out our Library of Things, including everything from ukukleles and fishing poles to Nintendo Switch games. Borrow a book, magazine, or movie from our collection, or request one from across the state. If the weather permits, enjoy your ice cream and free flowing WiFi in the children's garden.

Join us as we reminisce about twenty years in the "new" (paid off!) building and over a century of the library in Cheboygan-- and make more memories together!

Do you remember when the library looked a little different?

Cheboygan has some great memories from library days gone by. We're celebrating over a hundred and thirteen years of the library in Cheboygan, and 20 years in our "new" building. The building may look different, but we're still here providing for our community's educational, informational, cultural and recreational needs.

Share a memory of the library with us! Comment here, or write it down and bring it to our Ice Cream Social tomorrow, August 26th, from 6:00-7:30. We'll add it to our time capsule to be unearthed some day in the library's far-off future.

Here's to the tradition of the library continuing in the heart of Cheboygan with all of you!

This Wednesday, it's time to celebrate at the library!

Can you believe it? Our current library building turns 20 this year! Better yet: it's all paid off! We're celebrating the same way we did at the Grand Opening, with a community Ice Cream Social on August 26th.

From 6:00-7:30pm, we'll have ice cream, live music courtesy of Dale Rieger, live carving demonstrations by the Lord of the Gourd, and interactions with live raptors. Bring along a time capsule to "bury" in the library for future library folks.

Our Anniversary Celebration is open to all, just like the library has been for over a century, and like so many of the programs, meetings, and events the library has been able to offer in our spaces over the last 20 years. We look forward to celebrating many memories with you all!

Geese flew over the library today: fall is on its way. Capture beautiful autumn images this year with digital photography-- take a lifelong learning class at the library!

Digital Photography is a four session course taught by skilled local photographer Dan Welihan. Participants will learn the essentials of composition and creativity, moving images from camera to computer, and editing to create a personal digital masterpiece.

All skill levels are welcome! Cameras are not required, but participants are welcome to bring them along. Digital Photography class will meet Tuesdays from 6:00-8:00pm September 22nd, 29th, October 6th, and October 20th. The cost is just $35.

Borrow more ebooks-- with partner libraries in Libby.

New this week, partner libraries are automatically added to your Libby app when you sign in! On the Libby menu page a patron with a Cheboygan library card will see CAPL displayed as “Your Library”, and all our partner systems displayed as “Partner Libraries."

Our digital collection group, the Up North Michigan Consortium, has partnered with 15 library groups across the state, and now you can use your library card to borrow titles from these partner library systems. Access hundreds of thousands more ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines! You get to borrow separate titles from each system, in addition to the 5 at a time you're allowed in Up North.

Learn American Sign Language-- at the library!

At least 2 million Americans use ASL regularly. Communicate with those friends, neighbors, and members of your community: learn some ASL! All skill levels, from beginner to expert, are welcome to learn and practice in conversation here.

Our library sign language classes are offered at no cost to you, Classes are informal, designed to grow everyone's skills with a conversational format. Registration is limited, and open to everyone ages 10 and up.

The 2026 fall session will meet on Thursdays from 5:30-6:45, Sept 24, Oct 1, 15, 22, & 29. To register for class, you can stop in or call 627-2381 during open hours, use the class registration form on our website, or message us here on the page any time.

Did you know that the current 200k population of wild turkeys in Michigan started from fifty birds-- after being entirely wiped out at the end of the 1800s?

On Tuesday, September 15th, 2026, at 6:00pm, come to the library for Turkey Talk. Expert Jeremy Wood will be here to tell us all about wild turkeys in Michigan. You might think there's not much to say about these birds, but it turns out, the story of turkeys in Michigan is *wild*!

Jeremy is a wildlife biologist with the Michigan DNR based in Ga***rd. Jeremy is an expert in the field, with experience in research as well as natural resource administration. His previous professional roles include the Turkey Program Coordinator for the Arkansas Fish & Game Commission. Michigan is lucky to have him in 2026, as the DNR begins a four-year research project to study how best to maintain Michigan's wild turkey populations.

This program is open to all, and will be held in our lower level Center for Community Programs. We hope you can join us for what will be a wild and wonderful Turkey Talk!
