Research shows that maintaining sibling relationships can support emotional well-being, improve placement stability, and help children preserve important family connections.

During pre-service training, we discuss ways foster families can encourage sibling bonds—whether that means welcoming sibling groups into their homes or helping brothers and sisters stay connected through visits, phone calls, and shared experiences.

Long before today’s foster care system existed, thousands of children traveled across the country on what became known as the “orphan trains.” Between the 1850s and the 1920s, children were transported from crowded cities to communities throughout America in hopes of finding safety, stability, and belonging.

While foster care has evolved significantly since then, one thing remains true: children need caring adults who are willing to open their hearts and homes.

At Children's Choice, our pre-service training explores how the child welfare system has changed over time and how foster parents can make a lasting difference in a child’s life today.
