Is an Anti-Malaria Gene Tied to Triple-Negative Breast Cancer?

What genetic determinants of health drive #breastcancer disparities in Black women?
Cancer Center Director Jan Kitajewski, PhD, and UIC colleagues are investigating the ACKR1 protein, which protects carriers from malaria but might make them vulnerable to triple-negative breast cancer.

https://bit.ly/3km67il

Understanding role of the ACKR1 protein at a cellular level may help scientists understand why triple-negative breast cancer is more common or more aggressive among Black women.

Bioinformatics Study Explains Why Some Tumors Have Better Outcomes

An International Journal of Cancer study led by our bioinformatics lead Xiaowei Wang found certain HPV+ head and neck tumors activate the immune system, resulting in better patient outcomes. The opposite is true for tumors associated with smoking and alcohol.

The presence of HPV in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma promotes the body’s own immune response and suppresses activities in the extracellular matrix. The cancer is more aggressive and harder to treat when HPV is not present.

Researchers Find Location Matters in the Battle Against Neuroblastoma - University of Illinois Cancer Center

Our researchers wanted to know why #neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer, appears mostly in the trunk of the body. Cancer Center member Ankur Saxena, PhD, and his lab discovered that cancer cells can become non-malignant, depending on where they're found. It's all about location.

https://bit.ly/3m7bxNU

The findings, published in Developmental Cell, demonstrate that neuroblastoma cells react to their physical location in the developing vertebrate embryo, with certain environments allowing survival while others do not. The discovery that human neuroblastoma cells, including patient-derived xenograft...
