Today, we’re excited to highlight one of Lincoln Park’s fantastic women owned businesses. Meet Veronica Rubio of Salon V Chicago!
What do you like most about owning and running your own business?
“Owning and running my own business and being responsible for other's livelihoods pushes me to work hard. Having my name on the door motivates me to be the best version of myself!”
Why did you open your business in Lincoln Park?
“I love Lincoln Park! It's beautiful and has such a great welcoming vibe. I like being tucked away in the neighborhood. I wanted to choose a location that attracted new clients and welcomed our diverse existing clientele from all over the city and suburbs. It's location is well known and super easy to get to. Doesn't everyone know where Lincoln Park is?”
What has been your greatest success as a business owner?
“Salon V surviving 2020 is my greatest success! lol! I would say my greatest success has been sharing my knowledge. I truly love what I do and pass that along to each and every person that steps foot in my salon. We've grown some fantastic artists at Salon V, and I'm proud of all of them. Typically our staff come to us at a very young age and I feel like my gift is helping them find their path in the beauty industry, whether they stay with us or spread their wings and fly in another direction. Our talented team makes strong connections with our guests and some have been with us since the start in 2005.”
What is your top challenge as a business owner?
“I still find it a challenge to find a personal and professional balance of time. It's something I'm constantly working on. I tend to work a lot because as I mentioned, I really love what I do. I find that a good "challenge" to have. I have to remind myself that I deserve the time off. This past year has shown me the importance of time with friends and family and self care/alone time.”
What advice would you give others starting a new business?
“Make sure you're ready for the work! You have to love what you do, who you do it with and who you do it for because especially in those first few years you will spend a lot of time doing it! Don't be too hard on yourself. The failures are even more valuable than the successes because they teach you what not to do. Be prepared for change. Trust professionals with the tasks you can't handle. Budget for things like accountants and attorneys, you WILL need good ones.”
