Today, we’re excited to highlight one of Lincoln Park’s fantastic women owned businesses. Meet Veronica Rubio of Salon V Chicago!

What do you like most about owning and running your own business?
“Owning and running my own business and being responsible for other's livelihoods pushes me to work hard. Having my name on the door motivates me to be the best version of myself!”

Why did you open your business in Lincoln Park?
“I love Lincoln Park! It's beautiful and has such a great welcoming vibe. I like being tucked away in the neighborhood. I wanted to choose a location that attracted new clients and welcomed our diverse existing clientele from all over the city and suburbs. It's location is well known and super easy to get to. Doesn't everyone know where Lincoln Park is?”

What has been your greatest success as a business owner?
“Salon V surviving 2020 is my greatest success! lol! I would say my greatest success has been sharing my knowledge. I truly love what I do and pass that along to each and every person that steps foot in my salon. We've grown some fantastic artists at Salon V, and I'm proud of all of them. Typically our staff come to us at a very young age and I feel like my gift is helping them find their path in the beauty industry, whether they stay with us or spread their wings and fly in another direction. Our talented team makes strong connections with our guests and some have been with us since the start in 2005.”

What is your top challenge as a business owner?
“I still find it a challenge to find a personal and professional balance of time. It's something I'm constantly working on. I tend to work a lot because as I mentioned, I really love what I do. I find that a good "challenge" to have. I have to remind myself that I deserve the time off. This past year has shown me the importance of time with friends and family and self care/alone time.”

What advice would you give others starting a new business?
“Make sure you're ready for the work! You have to love what you do, who you do it with and who you do it for because especially in those first few years you will spend a lot of time doing it! Don't be too hard on yourself. The failures are even more valuable than the successes because they teach you what not to do. Be prepared for change. Trust professionals with the tasks you can't handle. Budget for things like accountants and attorneys, you WILL need good ones.”

Meet Esther Fishman with Art Effect - one of #LincolnPark’s fantastic women owned businesses.
.
What do you like most about owning and running your own business?
I love being my own boss and the freedom and responsibility that comes with it. I love the challenges and that every day is something different.
.
Why did you open your business in Lincoln Park?
I opened my business with a 100 percent consignment from artists. I knew people who made clothing and accessories and I thought a store selling their work would be a good idea. I was also at a time in my life when I wasn't sure what I wanted to do.
.
What has been your greatest success as a business owner?
The store being as successful as it is and being an integral part of a great neighborhood. People brought their children here 36 years ago and now their children are bringing theirs. I have made incredible friendships over the years with customers and employees.
.
What is your top challenge as a business owner?
Not sure there is a top challenge because different years bring different things. Never would have thought I would be living through a pandemic, but you always need to be prepared to change. Leave your ego out of the business because there are things you do to make your business survive that you thought you would never do. Nothing illegal! But you may carry a popular item that you may not love!
.
What advice would you give others starting a new business?
Make sure you have enough capital. Things are very different these days and it costs so much to just open your doors. Realize that it will take time to make money and usually in the beginning all your profits go back into the business.

Today, we’re excited to highlight one of Lincoln Park’s fantastic women owned businesses. Meet Tara Ziebarth of Harmony Mind Body Fitness!

What do you like most about owning and running your own business?
“The relationships with my clients are by far the most rewarding part of the gig!”

Why did you open your business in Lincoln Park?
“When I moved to the city nearly 20 years ago I landed in Lincoln Park because it was near my job, it has since become my home and community in every way. From my business, to my clients, to my morning cup of tea, Lincoln Park is home.”

What has been your greatest success as a business owner?
“Figuring out how to do it during a pandemic with a newborn at home!”

What is your top challenge as a business owner?
“Staying true to my mission. The fitness industry is very trend-focused and I didn't get into fitness to be trendy. Sometimes it's hard to balance staying current and staying true to myself.”

What advice would you give others starting a new business?
“Make sure that you are passionate about all aspects of owning a business (or find a partner to help balance things out). I am passionate about teaching, but have a much harder time motivating myself when it comes to the business ownership aspects of my job.”

Today, we’re excited to highlight one of Lincoln Park’s fantastic women owned businesses. Meet Meg Carroll(middle) of Bedside Manor Ltd!

What do you like most about owning and running your own business?
“There is a daily reward of coming to work every day when it’s your leadership and influence that will set the tone for the day. The true bonus is having a team that is also deeply invested in their work and we share common goals of doing our best and achieving success.”

Why did you open your business in Lincoln Park?
“Lincoln Park is a wonderful neighborhood to be part of for many reasons! We have had our boutique on Halsted for 32 years and have seen lots of changes over our time here. Always a great destination for shopping, theater, and restaurants that are close to the park, the lake, and transportation. We cater to our nearby residents as well as folks who like to visit the Halsted/Armitage Square to stroll the shops, grab a coffee, glass of wine, or a nice lunch or dinner.”

What has been your greatest success as a business owner?
“Bedside Manor Ltd was established in 1985 and we have seen wonderful growth over the years as we added multiple locations. Now we have the good fortune to have two of our children join the company and continue to build our brand and take it into the future.”

What is your top challenge as a business owner?
“Challenges come our way both large and small. We have weathered recession, 9/11, team members facing difficult times, and most recently the year 2020 and all it brought. Managing the crises is when we see ourselves come together and roll up our sleeves to do whatever it takes.”

What advice would you give others starting a new business?
“Enjoy your work and take pride in it!”

Today, we’re excited to highlight one of Lincoln Park’s fantastic women owned businesses. Meet Nadia Vizcarra of Don Pez!

What do you like most about owning and running your own business?
“I enjoy the hospitality industry. Working and serving people, making them smile through tasty food is pure happiness. Feeding them something that they will remember and hopefully come back for is what I like most.”

Why did you open your business in Lincoln Park?
“This neighborhood is great! My menu caters to all genres within it. Whether you’re a student learning from home, stroller mom (like me) stopping in with the kids. If you’re on the go it’s quick, delicious. Hanging out with friends, you come and vibe on our patio and enjoy fresh tasty food. The working class and local businesses, everybody loves a good taco. The idea of community and supporting small businesses is implemented nicely here. Don Pez is fun, cool with a distinct deliciousness that I think fits great in LP.”

What has been your greatest success as a business owner?
“All the great feedback from my customers. I depend on their satisfaction and it’s comforting to know they love the tacos and savory bites!”

What is your top challenge as a business owner?
“Being a Minority-women owned business is a challenge in and of itself these days. I started Don Pez in the midst of such trying times, while being pregnant. I gave birth to my second daughter on Thanksgiving. So it has been an intense and overwhelming 2020, to say the least. I love a good challenge though!”

What advice would you give others starting a new business?
“Stay disciplined, work hard and let your creativity flow. Do what makes you happy and remember the road to success isn’t a walk in the park. It takes time, patience and dedication. The seas are rough but you have to stay tough.”

Today, we’re excited to highlight one of Lincoln Park’s fantastic women owned businesses. Meet Chef Taryn of The Kismet Table!

What do you like most about owning and running your own business?
“I love the creativity & freedom that comes from owning my own business. The motivation I feel each day to do my very best to grow something I created into a success is beyond anything I ever imagined.”

Why did you open your business in Lincoln Park?
“Lincoln Park is home for me; my dad has lived here my whole life. When the space on Halsted came available, I just knew it was meant to be. LP is hungry (literally) for an idea like Kismet: a place where you know you can pick up an incredible meal to bring home or plan an event to celebrate one of life's great moments.”

What has been your greatest success as a business owner?
“Simply opening during the pandemic has to be the greatest success thus far. Stars aligned so I could make this happen and I am grateful every day. The relationships we're developing with our customers make me so happy; I'm just thrilled to be a part of this community.”

What is your top challenge as a business owner?
“Obviously, the pandemic and this entire last year have presented the biggest challenges, it's made it difficult to find/ keep employees, to feel a sense of security financially, and to escape a near-constant anxiety. But, it's comforting to know every small business owner is facing the same challenges, and I appreciate the opportunities to brainstorm solutions along with them.”

What advice would you give others starting a new business?
“Surround yourself with the most positive, supportive, and diverse-minded tribe. Starting out will be extraordinarily difficult and you will doubt yourself regularly. Having people who have your back, no matter what, will make all the difference.”

Every week I speak to Chambers of Commerce, Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions and other businesses and organizations about the incredible power of gratitude with a 30-minute talk entitled: “Conquering Pandemic Anxiety Through Gratitude”. My Zoom presentation demonstrates how gratitude has transformed countless people in a world of way too many unhealthy coping mechanisms. Your members will learn about: • How gratitude can overcome any life-changing event • The power of the “You Are” exercise • The 60-second gratitude challenge • How writing in a daily gratitude journal can change a life With over 1050 gratitude videos posted on my YouTube channel, thousands have seen my message. I recently spoke in Honolulu, San Antonio, Minneapolis, San Diego and at our US military bases. My published books include “The Brooker’s Daily Gratitude Journal,” “Six-Word Lessons to Embrace Gratitude” & other books on gratitude. I would love the opportunity to speak to your group about how embracing gratitude can change their lives too. “Gratitude turns what you have into enough” Thank you so much for your consideration.
