LUCHA was founded in 1982 by residents of Humboldt Park, West Town and Logan Square to combat displacement and preserve affordable housing in the community. Since its founding, LUCHA has helped more than 68,000 low-to-moderate income families rent decent and affordable housing, obtain Section 8 rental assistance, purchase goo
d homes, improve dilapidated buildings, make emergency repairs, make their home more accessible or more energy efficient, and beautify their neighborhoods. LUCHA is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization
The mission of LUCHA is to provide decent and affordable housing, housing services and education to low and moderate income Latinos and other residents. LUCHA fosters community stability in neighborhoods lacking adequate housing due to discrimination on the basis of race, national origin, religion, familial status, and disability. This is done by empowering residents through education and participation, promoting affordable housing development and home ownership, rehabilitating and managing housing, providing organizing leadership and advocating for resources. LUCHA is a housing counseling agency certified by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the City of Chicago.

At LUCHA, we believe housing is a human right. As part of our central commitment to racial equity via affordable housing creation and preservation, LUCHA has built and currently manages over 200 units of affordable rental housing throughout Humboldt Park, Logan Square and West Town.
Did you know: LUCHA’s been a leader in policy advocacy and preservation of affordable housing for over 40 years! Rooted in the Humboldt Park community, we’ve helped thousands of families overcome obstacles to access safe, affordable and stable housing since 1982. Our first affordable rental housing building was developed in 1988 at 1414 N Washtenaw in Humboldt Park. Check out some photos from the ribbon cutting ceremony!
Meet Guille! Guille is one of LUCHA’s bilingual HUD-certified Housing Counselor, a key member of our Housing Opportunities Program team, and has been with LUCHA for over eight years. She helps first-time homebuyers navigate the process of purchasing a home through individual counseling and educational workshops.
“Through my daily work I am able to empower individuals to create and build credit, save, and budget, as well as to help them find/retain housing, and/or achieve the dream of becoming a homeowner.” When asked what being a housing counselor means to her, she says,“ being a HUD-approved counselor is much more than a job, it is an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. It is a call to challenge the system and strive together to make things right and to make individuals whole again.”
Our Housing Counseling team hosts a monthly workshop series on a variety homeownership-related topics. Register for one of free, virtual workshops here: www.lucha.eventbrite.com
Meet Gloria! Gloria is a tenant at LUCHA’s Humboldt Park Residence (HPR) property. She’s been a LUCHA tenant for over seven years. When asked what her favorite thing about LUCHA is, she says “LUCHA gave me somewhere to live when I was homeless.” She also likes LUCHA’s responsiveness to tenant needs: “When you ask for something that you need for your room, they do it the same day.”
We offer comprehensive resident services to our tenants—ranging from resource referrals, tenant programming and field trips, and individual counseling.
LUCHA has developed and managed over 200 units of affordable housing in the Humboldt Park and Logan Square communities. Most recently, we rehabbed our Humboldt Park Residence building to preserve 65 SRO units and upgrade amenities for residents. Renovations include private bathrooms, a fitness center and a brand new community room!
Nothing says team building quite like a collaborative project! Department of programs prepping for the end of the year. 👯♀️

LUCHA is very proud of its roots in Humboldt Park and the Chicago Puerto Rican community. Today, we took part in the Puerto Rican Agenda of Chicago's press conference to call attention to the dire situation on the island.
Over the weekend, Hurricane Fiona hit Puerto Rico, which still has not recovered from Hurricane Maria in 2017, leaving most of the island's residents without power and without water. The Puerto Rican Agenda of Chicago is bringing back its 3R’s for Puerto Rico: Rescue, Relief, Rebuild campaign, working in solidarity, not charity, to provide help to the residents of the island. Please consider making today at donation at:
