Civility is fundamental to the fair and respectful administration of justice. Every day, judges, court professionals, attorneys, litigants, and members of the public come together to resolve matters through a process built on professionalism, respect, and the rule of law.

During National Civility Month, the Circuit Court of Cook County recognizes the importance of treating one another with courtesy and respect, both inside and outside the courtroom.

NOTICE: Due to a weather-related power outage affecting the Fifth Municipal District Courthouse (10220 S. 76th Avenue, Bridgeview), operations have been temporarily modified for Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

• Initial Appearance and Electronic Monitoring (EM) violation hearings will be heard at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse (2600 S. California Ave., Chicago).

• Felony preliminary hearings and all other felony cases have been continued to August 4, 2026.

• Traffic and misdemeanor cases have been continued to September 3, 2026.

• Initial appearances in domestic violence cases will be heard at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse (2600 S. California Ave., Chicago).

• New emergency civil protective order petitions will be heard at the Domestic Violence Courthouse (555 W. Harrison St., Chicago).

• Civil Order of Protection return cases have been continued to August 13, 2026.

• All other domestic violence cases have been continued to August 4, 2026.

• Civil continuances will be granted by court order of the presiding judge in each case.

A day of celebration, community, and preparing for the school year ahead.

Yesterday, the Cook County Juvenile Probation Department hosted its 5th Annual Back to School Expo, welcoming young people, families, neighbors, and community members for a day filled with resources, fun, and support.

Attendees connected with community organizations, received free backpacks and school supplies, explored educational and employment resources, enjoyed free food, obtained immunizations, and spent time with partners dedicated to helping youth and families thrive.

The event reflected the Juvenile Probation Department's ongoing commitment to building strong community connections and ensuring every child has the tools and encouragement needed to begin the school year with confidence.

A heartfelt thank you to our probation officers, staff, volunteers, community organizations, healthcare providers, vendors, and every partner who made today's event possible. Before the courthouse at 26th and California bore his name, George N. Leighton lived a life dedicated to service, justice, and equality.

A World War II veteran, Leighton left Harvard Law School to serve in the U.S. Army during the Pacific campaign, earning the Bronze Star before returning to complete his legal education. He went on to become a respected civil rights attorney, advocating for fair housing, voting rights, school desegregation, and equal access to justice.

His groundbreaking career led him to become the first African American appointed to the Illinois Appellate Court and later a United States District Court Judge. Along the way, he mentored future generations of legal leaders, including a young Barack Obama.

Today, the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse stands as a lasting tribute to a man whose legacy continues to inspire the pursuit of justice for all.

Meet Ruthie! 🐾

Cook County State's Attorney Eileen O'Neill Burke officially welcomed Ruthie, a two-year-old golden retriever, as the newest comfort dog serving the Domestic Violence Courthouse.

Ruthie joins Hatty, an eight-year-old black Labrador, in providing comfort and support to victims and witnesses working with the Cook County State's Attorney's Office Special Victims Bureau.

Congratulations to the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, Healing Hearts Comfort Dogs, Duo and everyone who helped make today possible.
