This week's webinar "Epilepsy & Brain Health" is posted on YouTube! Anny Reyes, PhD from Cleveland Clinic talks about the areas of our lives brain health impacts, what makes our brain unhealthy, and what we can do to improve or maintain brain health. Brain health affects our memory, mental health, moods, and cognitive abilities.

September is Self-Care Awareness Month. Self-Care is important for everyone, but it can also reduce seizures in people with epilepsy. Stress actually increases your chance of having a seizure, so taking care of your mental health is important for your physical health.

One great strategy is journaling. Keep track of your feelings, seizures, or both! Expressing yourself in a journal reduces stress and can help you see patterns that explain why you're anxious, depressed, or had a seizure.

School is back in session, does your school have the tools and knowledge to help students with epilepsy succeed?

Epilepsy has a lot of effects on a student, even when they're not actively having a seizure. Different types of epilepsy impact different parts of the brain, sometimes causing issues with memory, focus, mood, or mental health. They might feel left out by their classmates, or miss school more often.

We know now it's not safe, but sometimes we still hear the bad info to put something in someone's mouth during a seizure to stop them from "swallowing their tongue. Here's what to say if you hear this myth being spread:

1. They can't swallow their tongue. It's not possible.
2. You might make them choke, break their teeth, or hurt the muscles in their jaw.
3. You can get bitten, because the person having a seizure may not be in control of any of their movement.

It's also dangerous to give them any oral medication, food, or water during the seizure or before they fully recover.
