Trying some different techniques when needing to stretch past our pre connected hand lines. In this evolution we pulled our 250ft 2in crosslay. Simulating a second floor fire, we advanced it to the base of the stairs where we needed to extend our line. This provided an area of refuge which is important when choosing a place to build your line.
We extended it with 150ft Gustin pack off of the bail from our 2in line.
This gave us more than enough line to make it to our target on the second floor.
Advantages
- easy to move the 2in line
- could fight fire with it if needed
- crews are more proficient at pulling an attack line then a larger supply type line.
Disadvantage
- not as much water as say a large trunk line
- if the bail from the 2in line is not secured, you could potentially lose flow in your attack line.
We have also been trying extending from a 3in trunk line (garden stretch) with a gated wye. Major disadvantage to that is once the trunk line is charged it is very difficult to move, you must be more accurate when estimating the stretch.
