As we celebrate our amazing staff throughout the month of May for Employee Appreciation Month, we are so excited to spotlight the hardworking individuals and teams who keep Colusa County moving forward!

Today we are celebrating Deputy Probation Officer Gabi Ortiz!

What is your role with the County, and how long have you worked here? I am a Deputy Probation Officer. I have worked for the County for 8 years.

What is a moment in your job that made you feel especially proud or left a lasting impact on you? This job isn’t the easiest, but it’s always a nice reminder of why we do the job when we see a client out in the community doing well. I’d have to say the most rewarding part of my career thus far, though, has been working at our Department’s Day Reporting Center. It’s awesome to see their growth and listen to them support each other through their challenges. It’s also a chance for me to get to know the clients on a deeper level—to hear what they have overcome, what their dreams are, and learn who they are as a person and not just a client.

What motivates you to show up and do your best each day? I grew up working in my family’s bakery, and my mom and aunt taught me to take pride in whatever I do. Today, I work hard not only for the clients we serve, but to help my department run smoothly. I guess I also just want to be remembered as someone who cared and actually tried, rather than just someone who’s here because they have to be. Call it selfish, but the job gives me a sense of purpose.

What do you enjoy most about serving the community? I enjoy seeing people grow as individuals. I’ve had some awesome role models help me navigate life's ups and downs, but a good chunk of our clientele haven’t had that. Being able to help them acquire those tools simply feels good and just the right thing to do.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work or in your free time? I love to explore new places and try new experiences. My partner and I have dreams of traveling and seeing as much of this world as possible, and we want to share those experiences with our loved ones.
