September is Sepsis Awareness Month

Unfortunately, the leading cause of death in United States hospitals is sepsis. Simply stated, sepsis is the body’s life-threatening response to infection. Sepsis can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death. It is estimated that sepsis affects 1.7 million people, and is responsible for 350,000 deaths, every year.

September is recognized as Blood Cancer Awareness Month

This is a global effort, designed to help raise awareness of one of the world’s most prevalent and most dangerous forms of cancer: blood cancer.

Many people are familiar with leukemia or lymphoma, which are the most common forms of blood cancer.

Raising awareness of blood cancer, and particularly the signs and symptoms of blood cancer, can help to improve early diagnosis. As with all forms of cancer, early diagnosis is often the key to defeating this disease.

Tomorrow is the beginning of September, and September is Bourbon Heritage Month!

In 2007, the United States Senate passed a resolution officially declaring September as National Bourbon Heritage Month.

Bourbon has long been recognized as "America's drink". Back in 1964, a Congressional resolution declared bourbon as America’s native spirit. The result of this action is that no other place in the world can produce whiskey and call it "bourbon", making bourbon truly American.

This is of particular relevance to our Commonwealth, since the roots of bourbon can be traced to Pennsylvania. Many of those who came to produce bourbon (such as the Samuels family, with Maker's Mark) came from Pennsylvania.

I am sure you are familiar with the "Whiskey Rebellion", which resulted in many of our residents heading down the Ohio River to Kentucky, where they came to distill grain. (And we must be cognizant of the fact that there are direct ties to the Whiskey Rebellion right in the 45th District! Just ask anyone from Collier or Bridgeville!)

We are very fortunate to still have some terrific bourbon produced here in our area. Whether you enjoy the bourbon (or rye, which really was Pennsylvania's contribution) from McLaughlin or Liberty Pole or one of the other distillers in our region, you will find some very good Pennsylvania bourbon to celebrate Bourbon Heritage Month!

Among other recognitions, September is designated as Sickle Cell Awareness Month.

Sickle Cell Disease is a painful genetic blood disorder that causes life-threatening complications such as strokes, infections, and organ damage.

Studies suggest that 1 in 13 African-Americans have the sickle cell gene. Sickle Cell Disease also impacts those of Hispanic descent.

As with all diseases, early diagnosis can help alleviate the complications that are suffered

Celebrated annually during the month of September, National Kinship Care Month recognizes the grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other relatives who care for children when those children cannot safely remain with their parents.

Many, if indeed not most, children who are removed from their parents have an opportunity or ability to live with relatives. National Kinship Care Month is a reminder of the important work of keeping children connected to family members whenever possible. In addition, it is a great time to thank the caregivers who are supporting children both inside and outside of the child welfare system

Some important and very good news I thought I would share!

Pennsylvania hunters are breaking records and sharing the bounty!

During the 2025-26 hunting season, hunters donated a record 294,844 pounds of venison from 8,382 deer through Hunters Sharing the Harvest (HSH). That’s the equivalent of nearly 1.2 million servings of nutritious protein for Pennsylvanians facing food insecurity.

This milestone marks Pennsylvania as the nation’s leading state for venison donations, reflecting the generosity of hunters, processors, volunteers, donors, and sponsors across the Commonwealth.

Powerful partnerships between the Game Commission, Hunters Sharing the Harvest and Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture help drive the connection between hunters and communities, ensuring these numbers continue to grow in the coming hunting season.

Thank you to everyone who lends a hand in turning harvests into meals for our fellow neighbors in need.

Together, we're proving that hunting is about more than the harvest — it’s about stewardship and community!

September is Hunger Action Month—a crucial time to take action against the ongoing hunger crisis that too many people face.

Originally founded in 2008, Hunger Action Month serves as a national call to combat food insecurity, which continues to impact families nationwide, and right here in our Commonwealth.

If you are able to do so, please consider donating to and supporting local food banks and other agencies that work to fight food insecurity.

September begins National Emergency Preparedness Month.

National Preparedness Month, observed each September, was established by FEMA in 2004 to encourage Americans to prepare for emergencies and disasters.

This is a good time to have plans of our own in the event of an emergency. We have experienced so many storms this year, often with the loss of power. Severe storms may still happen, and then soon enough we may be seeing severe winter weather.

This is a good time to make sure we are prepared!

This is also a good time to thank all our emergency responders, from police and fire persons to EMS, school officers, medical professionals and government agents who work to keep us safe in times of emergency
