25th Anniversary 9/11 Motorcycle Ride…
Today, August 21, 2026, the City of Cumberland, Maryland Fire Department was honored to welcome riders participating in the 25th Anniversary 9/11 Motorcycle Ride as they passed through Cumberland. Fire Department personnel set up at Headquarters to greet the riders, show their support, and pay tribute to the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, as well as the countless first responders and service members who answered the call in the days, months, and years that followed. It was a meaningful opportunity to stand together with the riding community, honor the sacrifices of our nation’s heroes, and ensure that the memory of 9/11 continues to live on 25 years later.

Congratulations, Firefighter/Paramedic Nick Green!

The Cumberland Fire Department congratulates Firefighter Nick Green on officially becoming a Nationally Registered Paramedic!

Nick joined the department in January 2023 and recently completed the Garrett College two-year Paramedic Program, Class #23 (2024–2026). His hard work and dedication have paid off with the successful completion of the National Registry Paramedic certification process.

In addition to becoming a Paramedic, Nick serves as a Swift Water Rescue Technician and Extra Equipment Operator with the department.

Congratulations, Nick, on this outstanding professional achievement and your continued commitment to serving the citizens of Cumberland!

The Cumberland Fire Department is currently accepting applications for pre-employment testing for the position of Firefighter/EMT-Basic to be held on Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at 6:00 pm. Candidates must arrive by 5:45 pm the evening of the test. The testing site will be at the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute, 13928 HazMat Drive SW, Cumberland, MD 21502.
Candidates interested in participating in the testing process must submit an employee application by Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at 3:00 pm.
Applications, along with detailed information about the pre-employment testing procedures, can be obtained from the Cumberland Fire Department, Monday-Friday from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm. Applications can also be submitted through the City's website or Indeed.com.

Minimum Requirements: Individual must be 18 years of age at the time the application is made. Possess a high school diploma or equivalent of such. Vision must be 20/40 or corrected to 20/20. Possess a valid driver's license.
There is no training or experience required to apply or test for the Cumberland Fire Department. Candidates will receive all required training in the Fire Academy. Once hired, an employee must maintain a minimum of an EMT Basic license throughout his/her career with the Cumberland Fire Department.
The City is offering a $5,000 signing bonus for Maryland-licensed Advanced Life Support Providers. The acceptance of the bonus is optional and its payment subject to terms, including its full-payment being conditioned upon the employee's successful completion of on-the-job firefighting training and his/her completion of a minimum of five (5) years' employment with the City of Cumberland Fire Department.

Some people leave behind memories. Others leave behind a legacy.
Today, we ride in honor of Firefighter/EMT Kelly Frye—a devoted husband, father, friend, firefighter, and EMT whose impact reached far beyond the calls he answered. Kelly had a gift for making people laugh, lighting up a room with his quick wit and contagious smile. He loved his family with all his heart, took great pride in serving his community, and was known for his passion for his extensive fi****ms collection and the hobbies he enjoyed.
Though his watch has ended, his spirit lives on in every mile we ride, every story we share, and every life he touched. This memorial ride is more than a procession of motorcycles—it's a tribute to a man who lived with purpose, served with honor, and reminded us all to find joy in the moments we share.
Kelly, you are deeply missed, forever remembered, and never forgotten.

Congratulations to our current Fire Academy recruits on successfully completing the EMT program!

We're proud to announce that every recruit passed the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) cognitive exam on their first attempt and successfully completed the MIEMSS practical examination today.

Three recruits will now move on to their crew assignments, while the remaining two will continue their training in the Fire Academy alongside two additional recruits.

Completing an EMT program in just eight weeks is an outstanding accomplishment and a testament to the hard work, dedication, and commitment of these future firefighters.

Congratulations to each of you, and best of luck as you continue your careers with the Cumberland Fire Department!

The Mayor and City Council recognized several deserving members of the Cumberland Fire Department during tonight's council meeting.

Congratulations to Fire Chief Stephen L. Grogg on officially being pinned as our Fire Chief. Steve brings 30 years of experience with the Cumberland Fire Department, having begun his career in 1995 and progressed through the ranks to become our Fire Chief. Congratulations on this well-earned achievement—we look forward to your leadership in this new role.

The City also recognized five outstanding members for reaching 15 years of service:
