The House of Representatives today passed legislation (2026-H 7152A) sponsored by Rep. Brandon Voas that would increase the minimum veterans’ exemption on municipal taxes. The bill would increase the minimum exemption from $1,000 to $6,000.

“Rhode Island’s veterans have already sacrificed and given so much so that the people of Rhode Island may live with freedom and without fear. Raising the minimum municipal tax exemption for them is the right thing to do in order to demonstrate our gratefulness for their service to us all,” said Representative Voas.

The legislation now heads to the Senate for consideration, where Sen. Brian J. Thompson (D-Dist. 20, Woonsocket, Cumberland) has introduced the bill (2026-S 2916).

The Cumberland Democratic Town Committee is deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and longtime member, John Bessette.

John dedicated so much of his life to serving Cumberland — through the Democratic Town Committee, the Zoning Board, youth sports, St. Joseph’s Church, and countless community efforts. He was kind, welcoming, hardworking, and truly loved this town.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the entire Bessette family and all who knew and loved him. John’s impact on our community will not be forgotten.
