City of Decatur Fire Rescue This page exists to inspire, motivate and educate the community of the City of Decatur. Fire departments have always been on the forefront of fire prevention.

Because of this proactive strategy we have seen a dramatic decrease in loss of life and property from fires. Today's "fire" department is facing many, many different threats to the well-being of our community. We respond to medical illness emergencies, motor vehicle collisions, entrapment, hazardous materials incidents, victims of violent crime, victims of domestic violence, environmental emergenc

ies and numerous other scenarios. In order to have the safest possible environment for our city, we have to be proactive on all of these fronts so that we aren't responding to the emergency when it's too late. Through the use of social media, we hope to expand our message of health, wellness and safety to ensure the best possible quality of life for all of the community of Decatur.

Join FAO Jones during his morning check-offs of the Engine! Every morning, the oncoming crew receives a debrief of the day before from the departing shift. After, a thorough check of the truck and its equipment begin! This is repeated everyday without fail, to ensure all is in working, good condition. Fire Apparatus Operators, like Jones, carrying one of the most detailed and responsible jobs here at Decatur Fire Rescue. Juan Antonia Smith II
February 5, 2024 - June 12, 2026

It is with profound sadness that Rockdale County Fire Rescue announces the line-of-duty death of Firefighter Juan Antonia Smith II, who passed away on June 12, 2026.

Today, we honor a brave firefighter who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others. His courage, dedication, and selflessness exemplified the highest ideals of the fire service and will never be forgotten.

Though his watch has ended, his legacy will endure in the lives he touched, the community he served, and the brothers and sisters who had the privilege of serving alongside him.

Rest easy, Firefighter Smith. We have the watch from here. ❤️

CONGRATULATIONS SGT BYRD! 🥳

Sgt Kelvonte Byrd went through a 17 week long basic officer training course to further his career as a Fire Investigator, become a stronger public servant, and continue his knowledge of emergency response.
Not everyone can say, or would want to say, they have succeeded in the Fire academy AND the Police Academy!
We are so incredibly proud of him. While he was working hard everyday at the police academy, we were missing his leadership and presence.

Hooray for Sgt Byrd, the best police that never was, because he is returning home to us at Decatur Fire!
