As the experiment known as American democracy marks its semi quincentennial, its survival is gravely threatened. The unique constitutional framework of co-equal branches, each operating as a check and balance on the other, has been thrown out of balance. Legislative authority has been systematically eroded, and presidential immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts has created an imperial presidency as the concept that "No man is above the law" has become a relic of the past. Meanwhile the nation's highest court refuses to bind itself to an enforceable Code of Ethics. If our democracy is to survive, the delicate system of checks and balances that has undergirded our governance over the past 239 years must be restored. How can Congress act to ensure that government of, by, and for the people survives and prospers for the next 250 years?

A big thank you to my man Dr. Rashad Richey of Indisputable with Dr. Rashad Richey for moderating our "Protect Our Culture" panel at this year's CBC ALC. And thank you to our wonderful panelists, including my soon-to-be colleague Representative Dr. Jasmine Clark, the incomparable April D Ryan and Brandon Copeland, Executive Director of Athletes.org.

Black entertainers, athletes and journalists have long been cornerstones of global culture, consistently driving innovation, conversation, and influence across media, sports, and entertainment. From pioneers who broke down systemic barriers in newsrooms and on athletic fields, to today's titans of music, film, and journalism, Black creators have inspired and defined entire industries. Billions in profits are generated annually from their contributions, yet Black creators are often underpaid or uncompensated due to systemic and exploitative practices in creative industries.

To add further injury, Black creators are being persecuted and prosecuted for exercising their First Amendment rights, even as their contributions to the public discourse and to the culture are monetized with impunity by wealthy corporate interests. Whether it is Black journalists targeted for reporting hard truths, Black athletes penalized for using their platforms to speak out against racism, or Black entertainers having their creative expressions used against them in civil and criminal court proceedings, the freedom of speech rights of Black entertainers, athletes and journalists are under constant assault. This panel discussion will explore legislative pathways and industry strategies to end these targeted assaults, ensuring Black journalists can report freely, Black athletes are protected from plantation exploitation, and Black entertainers can create without fear of their work being weaponized against them.
