On May 23, 2026, at approximately 9:34 a.m., a Del Rio Police Department officer was patrolling the area of East Gutierrez Street when he observed a motorcycle being operated on a public roadway without a license plate as required by law.
The officer recognized the driver as Rene S. Garcia, 31 years of age, and knew Garcia had an active felony warrant issued by the Val Verde County Sheriff's Office for Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1/1-B, 1 gram or more but less than 4 grams.
The officer activated the emergency lights on his patrol vehicle in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop. Garcia stopped the motorcycle in the 300 block of East Gutierrez Street and began walking toward the front door of a residence. Despite multiple verbal commands to stop, Garcia refused to comply and fled on foot eastbound.
During the pursuit, the officer deployed his department-issued TASER; however, it was ineffective. Garcia was subsequently apprehended near the intersection of Gutierrez Street and Contreras Street without further incident.
Garcia was taken into custody on the outstanding felony warrant and charged with Evading Arrest or Detention. He was transported to the Del Rio Police Department for processing, where a computerized criminal history check revealed a prior conviction for Evading Arrest or Detention. As a result, the current charge was enhanced.
Garcia was charged with Evading Arrest or Detention with a Previous Conviction and was later transferred to the GEO Correctional Facility pending magistration.
