The Detroit Board of Police Commissioners is supposed to be a civilian body that gives Detroiters a voice in how the police department is held accountable.
But the reality is more complicated. Historically, the Board has often sided with the Detroit Police Department and has failed to seriously challenge police misconduct and brutality. For many people, that history has made it hard to trust the Board as a place for real accountability.
At the same time, the BOPC is still one of the places where Detroiters can show up, speak out, and demand justice.
When someone is brutalized by the police, when an officer abuses their power, or when a family is looking for answers, people have brought those demands directly to the Board. They have stood at the microphone, told their stories, confronted police leadership, and refused to let these abuses be ignored.
We know the limitations of this institution. But we also know the power of a community that refuses to stay silent.
