In 2016, I attended a Council meeting where there was discussion about the lack of information that was being provided to residents and businesses about a large project. Listening to the frustrations and challenges, I stood up and recommended that the borough consider taking advantage of e-newsletter platforms and social media to keep everyone up to date about what is going on in Dormont.

After that meeting, two members of Council approached me to ask if I would consider launching something. The idea was that, at some point, the borough could potentially adopt it in the future. The first edition was sent on July 4, 2016.

Named DormontTogether, it was intended to serve as a communications tool, but also as a way to highlight all of the great things that are going on in Dormont. The weekly e-news was also a place to share information on road projects, utility work and other activities from organizations and agencies inside and outside of Dormont.

Since that launch, there have been 530 editions.

In addition to a weekly calendar, there was general information from organizations including the Dormont Library, Dormont Historical Society, Dormont Athletic Boosters Association, and more.

The Dormont Diamond feature highlights the businesses, organizations, and people that live and work here in Dormont and make this such a great place. The first edition featured Sterling Yoga & Wellness Center. Once located in Dormont, the business now calls Scott Township home.

But that was just the beginning – there were 156 Dormont Diamonds over the last years. Some are still mainstays of Dormont, while others have moved to another community and others are no longer in business. And some of the people or organizations have also moved on because the one constant here is change. I’m so thankful that each of them were willing to talk with me and allowed me to share their stories with all of you.

This is Edition 531. It’s also going to be the last regularly scheduled edition.
While the borough never took this over, it has launched three newsletters that are providing a significant amount of information to residents and businesses – and the audiences continue to grow. It has made a weekly DormontTogether newsletter superfluous. And I couldn’t be happier.

The Borough’s Business, a weekly newsletter with borough information and details on their committee and voting meetings; Dormont Doings, a monthly newsletter that outlines all of the events and activities that organizations in the borough are doing the coming month; and, finally, The Borough Bulletin, sent as needed, provides breaking information on road construction, gas and water line work, and other emergent news.

This isn’t goodbye. The DormontTogether distribution list will remain – as will the Facebook and Instagram platforms. I’ll just use them more sporadically. If there is opportunity to highlight businesses, organizations, and people who make this community special – I still want to do that.

I’ve also been honored to have DormontTogether recognized as a Small Business Saturday (SBS) champion each year and I’ve heard from many of you that the SBS e-newsletter is something that you look forward to – so I’ll continue to do that, as long as businesses and organizations continue to share their information.

Thank you to everyone who has supported DormontTogether, answered my questions, provided information, shared posts, and encouraged me along the way. I’m grateful to all of you.

Amie
