In 2025, Opening Doors received 699 calls for shelter, and 42% of those requests had to be denied simply because we did not have the space. This July, 84 people were identified as living unsheltered in Dubuque County, compared to just 18 in 2022.

The need is growing, and we know that no single organization can meet it alone.

That’s why Opening Doors is working together with the Dubuque Rescue Mission and Dubuque Y Crisis Services to increase emergency shelter capacity in our community this winter.

Our goal is simple: fewer people turned away and fewer of our neighbors sleeping outside in the cold.

Making this possible will take additional space, beds, supplies, trained staff—and the support of our community. Together, we can create a stronger safety net for our neighbors when they need it most.

Please read and share the story below to help spread the word.

Homelessness quadruples in Dubuque, shelters seek $320,000 to prepare for winter.

🎉 A BIG STEP FORWARD FOR DUBUQUE 🎉
Addressing homelessness is now a City Council high priority.

This is an important step forward in recognizing that addressing homelessness requires a community-wide strategy and strong partnerships between the City and organizations already doing this work.

At Opening Doors, we believe every person deserves a safe place to call home. We’re grateful to the City Council for recognizing the importance of this issue and to everyone in our community who continues to advocate, support, volunteer, and work alongside us.

There is more work ahead, but today we’re celebrating progress toward a stronger, more coordinated response to homelessness in Dubuque. ❤️

Thank you, Dubuque, for believing that everyone deserves a place to call home.

We’re incredibly grateful to receive a Community Impact Grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque! 💙

This generous support helps Opening Doors provide critical resources to women and their children in our community, from essential needs to the supports that remove barriers and help individuals move toward greater stability and opportunity.

The grant will also provide valuable program support, strengthening our ability to continue meeting people where they are and connecting them with the resources they need to move forward.

Thank you to the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque for investing in the people and organizations working to make a lasting impact in our community. We’re honored to partner in opening doors to healing, hope, and home.

🙌CONGRATS🙌 to our 10 Community Impact Grant recipients! We're honored to grant a total of nearly $106,000 to these that are tackling some of Eastern Iowa's most pressing challenges:

Centrally Rooted
DeWitt Referral Center & Thrift Store
Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA Victim Service Shelter (Dubuque Y Crisis Services)
ElevateHER Network, Inc.
Friends of St. Mary’s (Steeple Square)
Mindful Minutes
Moms Connect Dubuque
My GEAR Outreach
Opening Doors Dubuque
River Bend Bend Food Reservoir (River Bend Food Bank)

This year’s grants are estimated to impact nearly 24,000 lives across the Dubuque region, based on figures provided by grantees. That's 10% of our region's population 😮

Community Impact Grants are open to nonprofits serving Dubuque, Clayton and Clinton counties. After narrowing down the pool of applicants, finalists were invited to make video pitches to the grant committee. The Foundation offered free one-on-one coaching to finalists to help them strengthen their videos and build skills to support all of their grant-seeking efforts.

As students head back to school, we want to give a BIG thank you to Norby's Farm & Fleet and RSM US LLP for generously donating school supplies for the children and families at Opening Doors!

Starting a new school year should be filled with excitement instead of worry about whether you have the supplies you need. Because of the generosity of our community partners, the children we serve can walk into their classrooms feeling prepared, confident, and ready to learn. ❤️

We are so grateful for a community that continues to show up for our families in so many meaningful ways.

Wishing all of our students, teachers, and families a happy and successful first day of school! 🍎📓✏️

🍋 We were so touched when Elise Briggs and her friend, Paisley, decided to spend their time running a lemonade stand...and then chose to donate the money they raised to Opening Doors!

Acts of kindness like this remind us that you’re never too young to make a difference in your community. 💕

Kindness doesn’t have to be big to make a big difference.

Thank you to these two amazing young ladies for thinking of the women and children at Opening Doors. Your generosity, compassion, and BIG hearts mean more than you know! 🍋💛

We were proud to have members of the Opening Doors team attend the United Way of Dubuque Area Tri-States Kickoff Breakfast! 💙

As a United Way funded partner, we are incredibly grateful for their continued investment in Opening Doors and the work we do to provide healing, hope, and home to women and children in our community.

It was wonderful to come together with so many local organizations and community leaders to kick off another year of making a difference right here in the Dubuque area. We’re thankful to be part of such a strong network of people working together to support our community!

Thank you, United Way of Dubuque Area Tri-States, for all you do—and for allowing us to be part of it! 💙

Dubuque has an opportunity to make a difference.

Next week, the City of Dubuque will set its priorities for the coming year, and we believe addressing homelessness should be one of them.

Opening Doors and our community partners work every day to help people experiencing homelessness find stability and a path forward. But no nonprofit can solve homelessness alone.

The City has an important role to play. Through housing policy, community planning, public investment, partnerships, and coordination, city government can help strengthen the work already happening and move our community toward longer-term solutions.

We need your voice.

We encourage Dubuque residents to contact the Mayor and City Council members and ask them to make addressing homelessness a City priority.

You don't need to have all the answers. Tell them why this issue matters to you and why you believe our community needs a coordinated response.

You can also attend the public goal-setting sessions:

📅 Monday & Tuesday
🕓 4:00 p.m.
📍 Grand River Center — Meeting Room 4

The Council will continue the goal-setting process throughout the week and finalize priorities on Thursday.

A community response requires a community voice.

Thank you for standing with people experiencing homelessness and for helping us build a Dubuque where everyone has the opportunity for a safe, stable place to call home.
