At 10:53 this morning the DFD responded to a structure fire in the 3600 Block of University Drive. The first units arrived at 10:59 and reported heavy fire conditions.

A rescue was made quickly from a first floor window and four other occupants escaped on their own, including an occupant who jumped from a window. Firefighters also rescued a dog trapped in an apartment.

Wind made firefighting conditions difficult and a third alarm was called after 15 minutes. The fire was declared under control after an hour.

Seven people were injured and five were transported to Duke ER, one of which was a firefighter with non-life threatening injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. We were assisted on this call by Durham County EMS, Durham Police Department, Durham County Emergency Management, Emergency Chaplains, American Red Cross, Chapel Hill Fire Department, and the Office of the State Fire Marshal. The New Hope VFD was on standby to assist with calls in the city.

We often stress the importance of having smoke alarms in your home - but every home should have carbon monoxide alarms, as well!

They call carbon monoxide "The Invisible Killer" because it's a colorless, odorless gas that can be lethal if inhaled.

Many standard smoke alarms check for both, so it’s important to know if your family is covered. Take some time today to make sure your home has CO alarms and that they're working.

And remember, never use a generator or grill indoors!

Last night we responded to an apartment fire on Leon Street.

An aggressive attack was utilized to get the fire under control, and firefighters rescued one victim from the home with life-threatening injuries.

This was a terrific response and strong work from the members of B-Shift!
