7/27/2026 - POOL UPDATE:
For the first time in awhile, progress at Chugiak High Pool is readily apparent in what is being added (vs. being taken away). Repairs have been made to the underlying slab, the new deck drain is in place, new lockers are installed, and they began pouring the new slab last week. Schedule-wise we are shooting for the pool being open by the end of September. Look for an announcement in a couple of weeks with a firmer schedule, alongside a notice that we are looking for lifeguards. 🤞🤞

Long Post Alert! - E-Moto (electric dirtbike) use in parks is an item of concern that people are increasingly bringing to our attention. Most of the complaints are focused on two areas – Mirror Lake Bike Trails and Town/Square Commons Park. To be clear this is an issue of safety and not about an unwillingness to let “kids be kids.” The singletrack trails at Mirror Lake were designed to be safe for pedaled bicycles. Operating E-Motos on these trails with their various jumps and features represents a potential serious hazard for the RIDER. Operating E-Motos in Commons Park on the hill and elsewhere represent a serious hazard to others using the park. There are simply too many other users present for these to be operated safely.

APD recently posted the attached graphic. It provides some specific information about the various classes of vehicles. At the practical level, our policy is perhaps a bit simpler – if your "bike" doesn’t have pedals, it’s not a bicycle, and shouldn’t be operated in our parks.

As the stewards of our local parks, we need to ensure the safety of all users. We are not anti-fun or philosophically anti-motorized use. There have been ideas kicked around over the years for creation of a motorized use area. We have some ideas about where this could be done safely and without disturbing neighbors. We are happy to participate in a discussion about how to move something like this forward. We encourage those that would like to see something like this happen get involved through their community council or the Eagle River/Chugiak Parks and Recreation Board of Supervisors.

Folks are always welcome to reach out with their concerns, but depending on the situation, it may be more appropriate to contact APD at the 311 non-emergency line.
