Douglass was founded by Mr. Andrew Morelock as the first organized private black school in El Paso. lass Elementary being nominated and receiving the prestigious National Blue Ribbon Award in 2012. This award honors schools for academic excellence and for significant progress in closing the achievement gap. The school was named Frederick Douglass to honor the great abolitionist who over came such adversities as being separated from his mother who was then sold. Douglass grew up illiterate due to the laws prohibiting black students to attend school. He also faced many other economic and social hurdles levied against his people. Though our demographics have changed to an almost completely Hispanic Community, some of the challenges incurred by being a border community still exist. Our goal and mission have not changed since 1883, teaching and training students to be productive members of society. EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT

Dear Douglass Families,

We want to inform you of an important new attendance requirement that will be in effect across El Paso ISD beginning with the 2026-2027 school year. Texas law requires students to attend at least 90% of the school year. For elementary students, missing more than 17 days may affect promotion and earning a final grade.

Queremos informarles sobre un nuevo requisito de asistencia que entrará en vigor en todo El Paso ISD a partir del ciclo escolar 2026-2027.
De acuerdo con la ley de Texas, los estudiantes deben asistir al menos al 90% de los días de clases. En la escuela primaria, faltar más de 17 días durante el año escolar puede afectar la promoción al siguiente grado y la calificación final.
