Meet Heather Karl, ERS' new Accounting & Payroll Specialist! 👋 Heather is a mom to two daughters, a third and eighth grader, who both attend school here.

The Texas native relocated to the area with her family after the pandemic, after spending many idyllic summers here.

"It just feels like home. I don't know what it is, but it it has just felt that way from our first visit," she said. "We wanted to raise our kids in a smaller, safer environment."

She felt affirmed in her choice to go north when she was warmly welcomed by school administrators, and even given a private tour of the schools to make sure her family felt comfortable and ready for the first day.

Since then, she says teachers have gone out of their way to support her daughters, particularly Mrs. Coleman.

Heather now joins ERS after more than 20 years of experience working in credit unions. She is responsible for making sure our staff get paid on time and managing retirement accounts and insurance.

🎓We are excited to share that Elk Rapids High School has been named one of the Top 20 best public high schools in Michigan according to U.S. News and World Report.

🏆 ERHS earned the 19th best public high school ranking in Michigan, and is #591 nationally, ahead of nearly 26,000 other schools analyzed.

🏫 Notably, the school is the only institution in Northern Michigan in the state’s Top 20. With a student population of 375, it’s also one of the only schools of its size on the shortlist, which is composed mostly of large high schools in Metro Detroit and greater Grand Rapids.

💭“We are unique in that we have multiple Advanced Placement [A.P.] course offerings, and that’s a direct result of the expertise of our faculty and staff,” said Principal Young.

“Academic rigor is an expectation here at Elk Rapids High School because of the support of our community. I think one reason for our success is the relationship we have with our students and families.”

📋 The Report’s biennial analysis considers college readiness, state assessment scores, graduation rate, and low-income and minority student performance.

💯 ERHS earned a 96.71/100 overall. The school has a 100% graduation rate and high marks for science proficiency and reading proficiency in particular. ERHS also has the 19th best state assessment proficiency in Michigan.
