🌪️ Understanding Tornado Warnings & Emerado’s Outdoor Warning Sirens

We’ve received a few questions about why the outdoor warning sirens were not activated during today’s Tornado Warning for Grand Forks County, and we’d like to explain.

A Tornado Warning for Grand Forks County does not automatically mean the City of Emerado is in danger. The National Weather Service often issues warnings for only a portion of the county based on a storm’s location and projected path.

When severe weather threatens our area, city and fire officials continuously monitor:
📡 National Weather Service radar
👀 Reports from trained weather spotters
🌩️ Storm movement and projected path
📱 Other trusted weather information sources

Using this information, we make an informed decision on whether the storm poses an immediate threat to Emerado and whether the outdoor warning sirens should be activated.

Today’s warning and the associated radar information did not indicate that the City of Emerado was under an immediate tornado threat, so activation of the outdoor warning sirens was not warranted.

If a tornado warning includes the City of Emerado, or a tornado is believed to pose an immediate danger to our community, the outdoor warning sirens will be activated immediately. At that time, the Emerado School will also be opened as an emergency shelter for anyone needing a safe place during the storm.

🚨 A reminder: Outdoor warning sirens are intended to warn people who are outdoors. They should never be your only source of weather information. We encourage everyone to have multiple ways to receive severe weather alerts, including Wireless Emergency Alerts on your phone, a NOAA Weather Radio, local media, or a trusted weather app.

Our goal is to provide timely warnings when they are truly needed while avoiding unnecessary siren activations that can create confusion or warning fatigue.

🚨 WATER UPDATE 🚨

The No Water Use Order has been OFFICIALLY LIFTED.

Laboratory testing has confirmed that the City of Emerado water system is safe, and residents may now resume NORMAL water use for all purposes, including drinking, cooking, bathing, laundry, and other household activities.

Residents may notice some discoloration in their water as normal use resumes and the system continues to clear. While the water may appear off-color, laboratory testing has confirmed that the water is SAFE for use and consumption.

Bottled water remains available at the Emerado Fire Department for anyone who still needs or would like it.

We extend our sincere thanks to our residents for their patience, understanding, and cooperation throughout this challenging situation. We also thank the crews, contractors, volunteers, and agency partners who worked tirelessly to repair the system, complete the required testing, and restore normal service.

Thank you, Emerado, for pulling together and supporting one another through this event.

💧 Water is safe for drinking and household use.

🚨 WATER SYSTEM UPDATE 🚨

The required water testing samples have been collected and sent to the laboratory for analysis.

Testing may take a day or more to complete, depending on the laboratory’s processing time. Once the results are received, we will provide an update to residents as quickly as possible.

The current water use restrictions remain in effect until further notice. Please continue to follow all guidance that has been provided. (Only use the water for flushing toilets)

Residents in need of drinking water are encouraged to stop by the Emerado Fire Department, where bottled water is available while supplies last.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we work through this process and await the laboratory results. Further updates will be shared as soon as information becomes available.
