MDSCAA Senior Companion Program

MDSCAA Senior Companion Program The Senior Companion Program serves Menominee, Delta and Schoolcraft Counties. Their efforts are aimed at helping others live fully independently.

Senior Companion Volunteers add richness to the lives of their clients, while providing access to the community, including grocery shopping, transportation to medical appointments and opportunities for socialization. In addition to improving the lives of their clients, Senior Companions find their lives enriched through service to others. Senior Companions serve up to 40 hours each week or an aver

age of four hours a day. The hours are flexible, but most companions are with their clients both morning and afternoons. Senior Companions receive a modest, tax-free stipend to partially offset the cost of volunteering. They are covered by accident and personal liability insurance while serving: receive an allowance for transportation and meals; receive an annual physical exam.

The Senior Companion Program/Foster Grandparent Program picnic at Besse Park went really well today. After signing in, we got envelopes containing more “Learn & Earn” paperwork to work on, a new calendar for September, and a paper letting us know of our next In Service in September (10th). We had Bingo, we had Sloppy Joes as the main course for lunch, and we had the Bucket Raffle, and Share The Wealth Raffle. It was a sunny day, and it was a wonderful day for a picnic. Great seeing everyone. See you on September 10th (Aug 14, 2026)

The Senior Companions/Foster Grandparents teamed up for another Picnic at Besse Park. We played Bingo and had many prizes for the winners. It rained and the wind blew. We had Spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread. It rained again, and blew. We had the “Share The Wealth” & “Bucket” Raffles winners. It rained and the wind blew, and then we blew away (yet, that wasn't the end of the day, more to come on what happened next). It was great time, and it was great to see everyone again. See you Again on August 5th at the Senior Center. (July 21, 2026)

The June 2026 In Service Picnic at Besse park teaming up the Senior Companion Program and the Foster Grandparents Program went really well. It was a beautiful day. We played Bingo, and everyone was a winner, and chicken dinner. We had “Share The Wealth” & “Bucket Raffle” drawings. We had an envelope filled with a calendar for July, Learn & Earns, and order forms for a new rain jacket. It was great to see everyone. We'll see you next month. (June 26, 2026)

LakeHouse Escanaba recently held a special event honoring notable military figures from the Upper Peninsula. Guest speaker Bill Castle, a Senior Companion Volunteer, shared inspiring stories of the UP men and women who proudly served our country.

LakeHouse's own veteran residents also reflected on their time in service, sharing personal memories and experiences that touched everyone in attendance.

We thank all of our veterans for their courage, sacrifice, and service to our nation.
