Central High School seniors spent a few Saturdays this summer painting their own parking spots, and now every morning they pull in to something they made themselves. Not a bad way to start the countdown to graduation!

Every EVSC student is back in the building together today, closing out our first week of the 2026-27 school year. Teachers are greeting our youngest students with high fives at the door, and hallways across the district were full of energy this morning.

It's a great day across the district, and we couldn't be more excited for what this year holds. Welcome back!

Dr. Katie Jenner, Indiana Secretary of Education, traveled to Evansville this morning to see two schools firsthand: Oak Hill School, which achieved a perfect 100% IREAD pass rate, and Caze Elementary School, which achieved 97%.

Dr. Jenner toured classrooms at both buildings, watched instruction in action, and personally thanked the administrators, teachers, and students responsible. When the state's top education official shows up in person, it's because the work is worth seeing.

The last of our students were back in the building today, and it was a great first day. Lockers filled up, hallways buzzed, and after a summer away, students across the district picked up right where they left off.

Everyone's back together starting Friday. Let's make this a great year!

The 2026 IREAD results are in, and nine EVSC schools recorded pass rates above 90%, up from five schools last year.

Oak Hill led the way with a perfect 100% pass rate. Caze and Vogel both surpassed 96%, followed by Highland, McCutchanville, Cynthia Heights, West Terrace, Hebron and Scott.

The progress reaches across EVSC, with the district-wide pass rate also increasing from 2025.

Reading is the foundation for everything that follows in a student’s education. These results reflect students rising to a high academic standard, supported by skilled educators and families committed to their success.

This is excellence in action across EVSC, and it deserves to be celebrated.

There's something about that first morning. Backpacks a little too big, shoes a little too new, and a wave goodbye at the door.

Today marked the first day back for half of our students across EVSC, and mornings like this one are why we love this job.

Right now, the halls are quiet.

The floors are clean, the chairs are stacked and waiting, and in some of these classrooms the only sound is the hum of the air conditioning. A reading nook sits ready under string lights and greenery. A courtyard gazebo waits under vines still growing. A blank display board already reads, "Amazing work coming soon."

It won't stay quiet for long.

In just a few days, these same halls fill with backpacks, footsteps, and 21,000 EVSC students walking back through the doors, reuniting with friends they haven't seen all summer and meeting the ones who'll matter just as much by winter break. One sign already has the right idea: be the reason someone smiles today.

We're ready for the noise.

Welcome to The Style Lab!

A brand-new cosmetology classroom at the Southern Indiana Career & Technical Center is ready for students.

The space opens this school year with 40 professional workstations, giving students a place to build the hands-on skills required for careers in cosmetology and barbering. The first class is already full and students will begin using the new classroom next week. These photos show what they will walk into on day one.

This summer, EVSC crews prepared schools across the district for the year ahead. Classroom improvements, athletic upgrades, new play spaces, roofing projects, and more are helping create better environments for students.

In the first "What’s Happening with Dr. Hoover" update of the new school year, Dr. Hoover takes a look at some of those projects and recognizes the custodial and maintenance teams who have worked all summer to make sure EVSC schools are ready for students’ return.
