On June 6, 1944, Allied forces launched the Normandy invasion—one of the most important military operations in world history. Among the thousands of Americans who stormed the beaches of France were countless brave West Virginians.
Men from our mountains answered the call to serve in every branch of the military. They fought through enemy fire, endured tremendous hardships, and helped liberate Europe from tyranny. Many never returned home, while others carried the memories of that day for the rest of their lives.
West Virginia's contribution to the war effort was extraordinary. From coal miners who powered the Allied victory to soldiers who fought on the front lines, our state played a vital role in securing freedom.
Today, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and patriotism of the Greatest Generation and remember the West Virginians who helped change the course of history on D-Day.
