People Incorporated honors Transgender Day of Remembrance and is committed to promoting an environment of inclusion and mutual respect, where each individual feels valued and celebrated. We know there is a long way to go, but, as an agency, we are dedicated to doing our part.

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is an annual observance on November 20 that honors the memory of transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. It was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, who was a transgender African American woman murdered in Allston, MA on November 28, 1998.

From PFLAG.org:
"The Transgender Day of Remembrance serves several purposes. It raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people, an action that current media doesn’t perform. Transgender Day of Remembrance publicly mourns and honors the lives of our brothers and sisters who might otherwise be forgotten. Through the vigil, we express love and respect for our people in the face of national indifference and hatred. TDOR reminds cisgender people that we are their sons, daughters, parents, friends, and lovers, and gives allies a chance to step forward with us and stand in vigil, memorializing those of us who’ve died by anti-transgender violence."

Just a day after the city election, School Committee Member-elect Bobby Bailey visited RPA with Anthony Comer, head coach of the Troy City Titans to provide inspiration to students at the Resiliency Preparatory Academy. Their presentation covered both Bobby's and Anthony's college and career paths with respect to the athletics they were involved in. Other presentations at RPA have included representatives from the Fall River Fire and Police Departments. Next week, RPA will recognize the US military with presentations from Brian and Brenna Custadio, Jonathan Estrella, and Derek Oagles, all of whom have enlisted or served in a branch of the Armed Forces. Well-deserved recognition! Thank you, Debbie Dutra, for your continued dedicated service on our board of directors. G. Lopes Construction is a valued staple in our community and supporter of our programs - a fantastic company and family!

When we talk about businesses and brands that have made a substantial impact on the Greater Taunton Area, there is one that has literally moved earth, built buildings, and created communities to solidify its standing at the top of this list; we are speaking of this week's #FridayBusinessFeature, The Lopes Companies!

It all started in 1964 when Gilbert Lopes Sr. (Sonny) began Lopes Trucking with just 1 truck and himself. He rented a garage bay from a local mechanic, Joe Abreau, and began hauling contracted loads all over southeastern Massachusetts. “Sonny worked very hard for many years to support his family,” says Lopes Company Treasurer and longtime employee, Debbie Dutra.

As the family grew so did the business; Sonny began employing his teenage children, Gilly, Gary, and Paula to help run the business and in 1979 he built the original blue space metal building located @ 565 Winthrop (on Rt 44) that still stands today. “I joined G. Lopes Construction in 1982 and it was a very exciting time to be a part of this successful, tightly knit family business,” said Debbie.

Then in 1989, Sonny with the help of his children, implemented a NEW program that was an alternative way to dispose of tree stumps and other waste materials from job sites. This program grew into an integral arm of The Lopes Companies, and in 1990 New England Recycling(NER) officially opened.

While The Lopes Companies have very much been Family owned and operated since day one, they’ve also been a major source of jobs in our community, employing many highly skilled and experienced technicians, drivers, and operations personnel.

In 2006, The Lopes Companies opened their Corporate Headquarters just a few minutes down Rt. 44 from their original home.

Sadly in 2010, son and part owner, Gary Lopes passed away due to a tragic accident, followed by the death of G.Lopes founder Gilbert Lopes Sr. (Sonny) 4 years later. Despite these 2 BIG blows to the family/business Gilbert Lopes Jr. (Gilly) continued to push the business forward in memory of his brother and father.

In 2011 The Lopes Companies purchased McCabe Sand & Gravel, now called Redi-Mix Services, continuing the legacy of one of the oldest and most respected manufacturers of concrete and concrete aggregates in southeastern Massachusetts.

In 2017 The Lopes Companies expanded yet again, adding New England Waste Disposal and acquiring the Rail Service Transfer Station in the Myles Standish Industrial Park. “As landfills everywhere in our local area are closing, waste materials needed to be aggregated out of southeastern Massachusetts, train/rail being the best mode of transportation,” said Debbie.

Now, as the 3rd generation of Lopes’ begins to manage and move the businesses forward into more arms of development, they honor the family legacy by striving to maintain the same integrity and work ethic their grandfather began some 5 decades ago.

G. Lopes Construction President, Gilbert Lopes Jr. (Gilly) has always made it a priority to give back to the local community, something his mother, Anita, instilled in him from a very young age. They are major donors to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South, of which Gilly serves on the Board of Directors, and helped in the building of Camp Riverside, the Hopewell Park Pool, and the Dighton Baseball Complex named in honor of G.Lopes Construction. The Lopes Companies also have donated thousands of Thanksgiving turkeys throughout the years to local food pantries, shelters, and families. They are a proud member of the Taunton Area Chamber of Commerce, Debbie Dutra being the Chair of the Board, as well as being on the Board of People Incorporated and the Taunton Area School to Career Program (TASC) by Associates for Human Services, Inc.

They would like to thank the local community for all their support as well as all the government offices and organizations that they work with! Be sure to follow The Lopes Companies on Facebook/Instagram/Twitter and visit their website @ www.GLopes.com for the full scope of services they offer!
