FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
From: JOSHUA MCATEE
Emergency Management Director
City of Farmington Fire Department
222 E. Columbia Street
Farmington, MO 63640
CITY OF FARMINGTON
Farmington, Missouri (August 21, 2023) – The City of Farmington would like to remind citizens that if relief is needed from the daytime heat because of predicted high heat indices over the next several days, any City building that is accessible to the public during normal business hours may be used as a cooling shelter. Water will be available at these locations.
“The National Weather Service says we could potentially have heat indices of 105 to 120 degrees through at least Thursday and possibly Friday,” said Farmington Emergency Management Director Johsua McAtee.
Locations include:
City Hall
110 W Columbia St
8 AM – 4:30 PM
Development Services
12 S Franklin St
8 AM – 4:30 PM
Civic Center
2 Black Knight Drive
5 AM – 8 PM
Library
101 N A St
10 AM – 9 PM (Mon - Thurs)
10 AM – 6 PM (Friday)
Police Department
310 Ste. Genevieve Ave.
24/7
Fire Department
222 E Columbia St
24/7
McAtee says during a Heat Advisory, it's important to take precautions to prevent heat related illness and injuries. Limit outdoor activity if possible. Drink plenty of water and wear light weight, loose fitting clothing. Never leave people or pets in a vehicle.
1. Stay in an air-conditioned indoor location as much as you can. If you don't have air conditioning at home, consider going to a public place with air conditioning such as the places listed above.
2. Drink plenty of fluids even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol as they can dehydrate you.
3. Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing and sunscreen. This will help protect your skin from the sun and keep you cool.
4. Pace yourself and avoid strenuous activities. If you must do outdoor activities, try to do them during the coolest part of the day such as early morning or late evening.
5. Schedule outdoor activities carefully. Try to limit your outdoor activity to when it’s coolest outside.
6. Use a buddy system and monitor those at risk, such as children, the elderly, and people with chronic conditions. Also take care of your pets, especially those who are left outside during the day.
