๐Ÿš‘ The Fine Line Between Volunteer Service and Home Life

One of the hardest things about being a volunteer isnโ€™t the pager going off at 2 a.m. or missing sleep.

Itโ€™s balancing the responsibility youโ€™ve chosen to accept with the life youโ€™ve built at home.

Sometimes there are family dinners, birthday parties, movie nights, or plans that have been on the calendar for weeks. Then the tones drop, and in a matter of seconds, a volunteer has to make a decision.

Because somewhere, someone is having the worst day of their life.

We often joke about:

โ€œWeโ€™ve been planning this dinner for two months!โ€

โ€œThe public is in danger!โ€

โ€œMy eveningโ€™s in danger!โ€

And honestly, both are true.

Families sacrifice too. Spouses, children, and loved ones understand that sometimes plans change because a neighbor, friend, or complete stranger needs help. They share in the commitment, even though they didnโ€™t sign up for the pager.

Being a volunteer doesnโ€™t mean family is less important. In fact, family is what makes this possible. They are the support system behind every response.

So thank you not only to the volunteers who answer the call, but also to the husbands, wives, significant others, children, and families who patiently say, โ€œGo. Weโ€™ll be here when you get back.โ€

Because behind every volunteer is someone making a sacrifice too.

โค๏ธ Family matters.

๐Ÿš‘ Service matters.

And sometimes walking that fine line between the two is the greatest act of service of all.

๐Ÿš‘ Happy Father's Day! ๐Ÿš‘

Today, Fayette Ambulance Service would like to wish a very Happy Father's Day to all of the dads who serve in EMS and to the fathers who support those who answer the call.

Thank you for your dedication to your families, your patients, and our community. We appreciate everything you doโ€”both on and off the ambulance.

๐Ÿ’™ Have a safe and wonderful Father's Day! ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿš‘โ˜• We Run on Caffeine, Compassion... and the Occasional Dad Joke.

Let's be honest...

Not every EMS shift is lights and sirens.

Sometimes it's checking equipment.
Sometimes it's cleaning the ambulance.
Sometimes it's drinking coffee while waiting for the next call.

But when someone in our community needs help, our volunteers are ready to answer.

The Fayette Ambulance Service is looking for new volunteers to join our team.

Whether you want to become:
๐Ÿš‘ An Ambulance Driver
๐Ÿš‘ An EMR
๐Ÿš‘ An EMT
๐Ÿš‘ An Advanced EMT
๐Ÿš‘ A Paramedic
๐Ÿš‘ A Registered Nurse

We'll help you get started.

What are we looking for?

โœ” People who care about their community
โœ” Team players who enjoy helping others
โœ” Individuals willing to learn new skills
โœ” People who can handle serious situationsโ€”and still appreciate a good dad joke

No previous EMS experience? No problem.

Many of our members started with no medical background at all. We provide training, mentorship, and support every step of the way.

Our daily plan is pretty simple:

โ˜‘ Help People
โ˜‘ Drink Coffee
โ˜‘ Save Lives
โ˜‘ Repeat

If you've ever thought about serving your community, now is the time.

๐Ÿ“ฉ Send us a message to learn more about becoming part of the Fayette Ambulance Service family.

Long Hours. Big Hearts. Strong Coffee. Proud to Serve.

๐Ÿฉบ EMS Tip: Hypotension vs. Hypertension

Many people hear these terms but may not know the difference.

๐Ÿ”ป Hypotension (Low Blood Pressure)
Generally considered a blood pressure below 90/60 mmHg.

Common symptoms:
โ€ข Dizziness or lightheadedness
โ€ข Weakness
โ€ข Fainting
โ€ข Confusion
โ€ข Cold, clammy skin

Low blood pressure can reduce blood flow to vital organs and may be caused by dehydration, illness, blood loss, or certain medications.

๐Ÿ”บ Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
Generally considered a blood pressure of 130/80 mmHg or higher.

Often called the "silent killer" because many people have no symptoms.

Long-term hypertension can increase the risk of:
โ€ข Heart attack
โ€ข Stroke
โ€ข Kidney disease
โ€ข Heart failure

๐Ÿ’ก The Bottom Line:
Blood pressure that is too low or too high can affect your health. Regular blood pressure checks and routine medical care can help identify problems before they become emergencies.

๐Ÿ’ง EMS Equipment Spotlight: Normal Saline ๐Ÿ’ง

One of the most commonly used medications carried by the Fayette Ambulance Service isn't a medication at allโ€”it's Normal Saline.

Normal Saline is a sterile saltwater solution that closely matches the body's natural fluid balance. Our Advanced EMTs and Paramedics use it for a variety of patient care needs, including:

๐Ÿš‘ Replacing fluids lost from dehydration
๐Ÿš‘ Supporting blood pressure in certain medical emergencies
๐Ÿš‘ Maintaining IV access for medication administration
๐Ÿš‘ Assisting with the treatment of heat-related illnesses
๐Ÿš‘ Providing fluid support for patients experiencing illness or injury

While a bag of Normal Saline may look simple, it is an important tool that helps our providers deliver advanced medical care before patients reach the hospital.

Every day, our volunteer EMS professionals use their training, skills, and equipment to provide high-quality care to our community when it matters most.
