About an hour ago, I sat down at my computer and discovered for the first time Senator Janice Marchman's unsupportive comments regarding the Loveland Police Department's Wednesday evening shooting. On Facebook, she expressed that she's "struggling to reconcile what de-escalation is supposed to look like with the outcome, which was not positive." Words cannot fully convey my indignation, frustration and anger towards the criticism aimed at the LPD.
I was present at the Loveland Police Department shortly after the 8th Judicial District's CIRT team was activated. While it would be inappropriate for me to comment beyond what LPD has released, especially as my team is leading the investigation, I can assure you that nobody wanted this outcome. The LPD spent hours negotiating with the suspect and utilized available de-escalation tactics before the situation escalated. Critics often overlook that everyone involved influences the outcome, including the suspect. It's clear where someone stands when they fire their weapon at nearby officers—it was the suspect's actions that ultimately determined how events unfolded after hours of effort to avoid such a result.
Chief Doran and the men and women at the Loveland Police Department are dedicated, selfless, and honorable public servants who work tirelessly to keep their community safe against increasing challenges. Today, senator, your comments have made their job more difficult, and they deserve better.
8th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team Activated Following Officer-Involved Shooting
On Wednesday, July 15, 2026, just before noon, the Loveland Police Department received a report of a domestic violence incident in which a subject threatened another person with a firearm. The victim reported the incident happened at a residence in the 3300 block of Banyan Avenue. Detectives immediately initiated an investigation.
Based on evidence developed during the investigation, an arrest warrant and a search warrant were obtained Wednesday afternoon for charges including Domestic Violence, Felony Menacing, Criminal Tampering, and Prohibited Use of Weapons. Due to information indicating additional fi****ms within the residence, previous threats of violence, and concerning subject statements regarding violence, the warrants were served by the Loveland Police Department SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiations Team.
Upon arrival, officers confirmed the subject was barricaded inside the residence. Crisis negotiators attempted to establish communication while the subject refused to exit. Throughout the incident, SWAT personnel employed a variety of tactics to gain the subject's voluntary surrender.
The subject ultimately exited the residence with a firearm. Officers again used less-lethal tools in an effort to gain cooperation, but the armed subject refused to cooperate, firing his weapon at nearby officers. Officers returned gunfire at which time the subject was struck. The subject was pronounced deceased at the scene. No other injuries have been reported.
The Larimer County Coroner will release the decedent’s identity, as well as official cause and manner of death, at a later time.
The 8th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) responded and assumed responsibility for the officer-involved shooting investigation. The Larimer County Sheriff's Office serves as the lead investigative agency. Any additional information regarding the investigation will be released by the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.
