Important updates are arriving for residents in the unincorporated areas of Alachua County. Starting today, October 1, 2026, our new agreement with GFL Solid Waste Southeast officially goes into effect.
Be on the lookout for a special printed notice in your mailbox this week detailing important changes to your residential curbside collection service.
🔄 What's Changing?
• Collection Day Schedules: Your primary curbside pickup day may have changed! Check your mailer or look up your address directly to verify your scheduled day.
• Yard Trash Limits: Residents can now place up to 2 cubic yards of yard trash out for collection each week.
• Updated Rules: New guidelines are also in place for bulky items and large appliances.

Lithium-ion batteries (the kind found in v**e pens, phones, laptops, e-bikes, power tools, e-watches and many rechargeable devices) can short, overheat, and ignite. When they burn, they produce extremely hot, fast-spreading fires that are difficult for firefighters to extinguish. Trash fires endanger workers, neighborhoods, and disrupt waste services. Recent fires are timely reminders that we all have a role in preventing hazardous waste incidents.

Bring ANY and ALL batteries to one of the County’s designated centers rather than throwing them in the trash. With six convenient locations, proper hazardous waste disposal is quick, free for residents, and it keeps your community safer.

Start diverting your food waste for free at home! Use the kitchen caddy to collect your food waste, and bring it to one of our collection sites.

Saturday, October 3, 2026 | 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Limited Supply “First come, first served”

Help divert food scraps from the landfill to composting

O-Town Compost will distribute free 2.5-gallon Kitchen Caddies to residents at Alachua County Rural Collection Centers on Saturday, October 3, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. This initiative encourages residents to divert food scraps from the landfill and convert them into nutrient-rich compost. Residents will receive a Kitchen Caddy along with compostable liners to collect food scraps at home. Materials can be dropped off in designated composting bins at participating Rural Collection Centers.

This program is available exclusively to Alachua County residents and is supported by a Circular Economy Grant from Alachua County.

“Since January 2026, residents have diverted nearly 12,000 pounds of food scraps from the landfill,” said Richard Devereaux, Gainesville General Manager of O-Town Compost. “Participation continues to grow, and we’re encouraged by the increasing volume of food scraps being composted.”

Alachua County residents living in the unincorporated area will soon see changes to their residential curbside collection service as part of a new agreement with GFL Solid Waste Southeast, effective Oct. 1, 2026.

🔥 Never throw away your batteries!

Lithium-ion batteries power everything from phones and laptops to power tools, e-bikes, watches and v**e devices. But when lithium batteries are damaged, crushed or improperly discarded, they can short, overheat and ignite—creating extremely hot, fast-spreading fires.

That means lithium batteries NEVER belong in your trash or recycling bins. 

Protect collection crews, sorting-facility employees and our community by bringing batteries to one of Alachua County’s six Household Hazardous Waste Collection locations. Drop-off is free for residents.
