Remembering Gila River Police Department Officer Joshua Briese. 💙

Today, recruits and staff at the Gilbert Police Regional Academy came together alongside Gilbert Police and Gila River Police officers for a memorial workout honoring fallen Gila River Police Officer Joshua Briese. Officer Briese graduated from the Gilbert Police Regional Academy in Class 5 before proudly serving with the Gila River Police Department.

Officer Briese had been with the Gila River Police Department for less than one year and was still completing field training when he was tragically ambushed and killed in the line of duty on June 1, 2024, while responding to a disturbance call.

His sacrifice echoes the service of his father, Deputy Sheriff David Leroy Briese, Jr. of the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office in Montana, who also gave his life in the line of duty on November 3, 2006.

In today’s memorial workout, we honor Officer Briese’s memory, his commitment to service, and the legacy he and his father leave behind. Their courage continues to inspire all who serve.

We recognize that mental health challenges affect individuals and families across our community. No one should have to navigate a crisis alone.

Our Crisis Response Team (CRT) includes crisis‑intervention-trained officers partnered with a licensed professional counselor, working together to support individuals experiencing mental health emergencies or emotional distress.

If you have questions about the CRT or want information on available community resources, email [email protected].

For emergencies, call 9-1-1. For non-emergency needs, call 480-503-6500.

Our Youth Community Engagement Officer, Officer King has been visiting Gilbert middle schools with her "Pause Before You Post" class. She shares honest, practical advice helping students think before they post, stay safe online, and make good choices that protect their future.

Officer King's message to students is simple: "The choices you make right now either open doors… or close them early. My job is to help you keep those doors open."

We’re grateful for Officer King’s dedication to keeping our youth confident and safe, on and offline.

Parents and educators, help us keep the conversation going at home and in the classroom. 💙

This is Gilbert. 💙

A resident saw an older gentleman stranded on the side of the street, pulled over, and called our non‑emergency line for help.

One of our officers arrived and quickly realized the situation wasn’t as simple as a flat tire. The gentleman needed his scooter, but he also needed a spare tire, which was all the way at his home in Mesa.

So the officer loaded the gentleman up, drove him to Mesa, grabbed the spare tire, and got him back to his car.

Then, two more officers arrived to finish the job: changing the tire right there on the roadside so he could get home safely.

The resident who witnessed it all told us, “These officers were so kind… it was a day maker.”

Moments like this highlight what community truly looks like. Neighbors helping neighbors, and officers going the extra mile.
