First Light Mission

First Light Mission First Light Mission is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing resources and shelter for people in crisis.

Guests that are homeless enter the program for a 30 day period. Every 30 days they receive a review, and as long as they are making progress in obtaining employment and/or secure housing, they may submit a written request to extend their stay. The key requirement is for us to see our guests working on the root of the problem that brought them to us in the first place.

🌷🐣 Happy Easter from all of us at First Light Mission! 🐣🌷

Today we celebrate hope, renewal, and the promise of new beginnings. At FLM, we are reminded daily that even in the hardest seasons, brighter days are ahead.

To our families, supporters, volunteers, and community—thank you for being part of the light that makes transformation possible. Because of you, hope is not just a word… it’s something our families get to experience every single day.

Wishing you a beautiful Easter filled with peace, joy, and love. 💛

One of the greatest moments for everyone here at FLM is when a family moves into their own place. Getting invited over to see it mostly set up makes it even better. Thanks to all the donors that make furnishing their places so easy.

Today our Executive Director got a chance to sit down with Kim Becker from HomeTown Living and talk about the shelter and our Annual Empty Bowl event. We are grateful for the opportunity to share and excited to see everyone on Saturday!

We are greatly appreciative of these last two groups from Grace Community Church Women's Bible Study that spent their Saturday to help us finish sorting and organizing our big mound of donations. We can't do what we do without our volunteers and community!

We would like to thank Tri Kappa of Goshen for coming in and spending a couple of hours helping us sort clothes and books. Not only did these great ladies donate their time, they also brought us items that were greatly needed. Thank you ladies for supporting FLM!

💛 URGENT NEEDS AT FIRST LIGHT MISSION 💛

Friends, we need your help.

As families continue walking through our doors, some of our most basic household essentials are running low. These are the everyday items that help restore dignity, comfort, and stability to the families we serve.

Right now, our most urgent needs are:

🧴 Household cleaners
🛏️ Pillows - urgently
🩲 Kids underwear (all sizes)
🧼 Hand soap
🪒 Razors
🧺 Dryer sheets
🥫 Soups
🍲 Easy-to-prepare meals
🍪 Snacks
🧃 Juice & individually wrapped snacks for kids

If you’re able, we would be so grateful if you would consider purchasing directly from our Amazon Wish List and having items shipped straight to us.

Every single donation makes a difference. These simple items bring comfort to children, relief to parents, and hope to families working hard to rebuild their lives.

Thank you for continuing to stand beside us and the families we serve. ❤️

Last night, I had the honor of attending 100 Women Who Care Elkhart & the Community Foundation of Elkhart County Galentine's event. I was given the opportunity to share the great work First Light Mission is doing along with two other agencies that we work closely with. Standing on the stage with Missy Kauffman Schrock from Center for Healing & Hope and Betsy Ayrea Delfine from Soup of Success was a great honor in itself, then all 3 of us be awarded $10,000 to continue our great work, was the greatest. The love in the room for all of us was inspiring. I am beyond grateful to get to share the night with not only these great ladies but also both of my daughters, who also FLM employees and a beautiful board member Elizabeth Hummel. FLM wouldn't be who we are without all the love and support from these ladies!
Thank you,
Mindy Morehead
Executive Director

It is such an honor to be a part of this group!

Today, the nonprofit partners who help drive the Hunger Ends Here campaign spent three focused hours mapping out how we reach even more people in 2026.

We’re responding with urgency and intention, working across organizations to make sure anyone who needs food can access it without barriers or stigma.

This kind of progress only happens through real collaboration. The momentum is real, and together we’re pushing forward to ensure hunger ends here in Elkhart County.
