During the early morning hours of August 19, an individual slashed the tires on 11 vehicles at multiple businesses north of town.

Hamilton Police Officers were able to obtain video footage from one of the incidents, which helped identify a suspect. Later that day, officers on patrol observed a male matching the description of the suspect. The individual was taken in for questioning and was subsequently arrested for Felony Criminal Mischief (45-6-101(4)).

We want to thank our officers and detectives for their hard work, quick response, and dedication in helping identify and arrest the suspect.

We appreciate the businesses and community members who provided information and assisted with the investigation.

🚸 School Starts Tomorrow!

Tomorrow is the first day of school, and we’re excited to see our community’s kids heading back to the classroom! With school starting, we’ll also have more kids walking, riding bikes, and crossing the streets throughout town.

As you’re out driving, please slow down and keep an extra eye out for kids—especially around crosswalks, schools, and neighborhoods.

Let’s all do our part to help make sure our kids get to and from school safely. Give yourself a little extra time and keep an eye out.

🚨 Notice Regarding Electric Motorcycles 🚨
The Hamilton Police Department would like to provide clarification regarding the operation of electric motorcycles (e-motorcycles) within city limits.

Under Montana law (MCA 61-1-101 (50)(a)), these vehicles are generally classified as off-highway vehicles unless they are properly equipped and registered for roadway use. To be operated legally on public streets, e-motorcycles must meet state equipment requirements, including registration, headlights, brake lights, mirrors, and other required safety equipment. Operators must also possess a valid driver's license with a motorcycle endorsement.

In addition, current city ordinances prohibits the operation of electric motorcycles in city parks (HMC 12.20.030).

As the popularity of these vehicles continues to grow, we want to ensure riders and parents are aware of the applicable laws and regulations. Officers will be enforcing state laws and city ordinances related to the operation of electric motorcycles.

This week we had 139 Calls for Service (CFS), 30 Cases Opened, and 50 Traffic Stops.

🚗 Traffic Safety Reminder 🚗

At intersections without stop signs or traffic signals, drivers must yield the right-of-way to vehicles approaching from the right. Slow down, stay alert, and never assume other drivers will stop.

A little caution at uncontrolled intersections can prevent serious crashes. Drive safe!

Reminder: With the weather turning nice, more people are out walking and riding bikes—please stay alert and share the road. Slow down in neighborhoods, watch crosswalks, and give cyclists plenty of space when passing. A quick extra look can prevent a serious accident.

Reminder: Montana law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and operate safely around cyclists (see Montana Code Annotated, including MCA 61-8-502 and MCA 61-8-608).

This week we had 117 calls for service, 26 cases opened, and 36 traffic stops. On April 21, a man suspected of identity theft visited multiple banks in the valley using forged identification cards. He was suspected to have committed similar offenses in March and a Hamilton Police Department detective was actively partnering with the Missoula PD to identify the suspect. Bank employees recognized the suspect and notified law enforcement. The suspect left the bank but officers and detectives quickly located, detained, and questioned him. He is charged with felony Identity Theft, Forgery and Theft.

Remember to regularly monitor your bank and credit accounts for any suspicious activity. Taking a few minutes to keep an eye on your accounts can help catch fraud early and protect your information.
