Montana Child Passenger Restraint Laws (Effective Oct. 1, 2025)
Montana's laws require children to be in specific restraints based on age:
Under 2 years: Rear-facing child safety seat.
Age 2-4: Rear-facing or forward-facing child safety seat with an internal harness.
Age 4-8: Forward-facing child safety seat or booster seat.
Age 9+ (or >4'9"): Standard seat belt

If your child wants to ditch the booster seat, check his or her seat belt fit. If you can check off all six items on this list, they are ready to ride without a booster seat. Want to learn more about correct seat belt fit? Check out Booster Seats and Seat Belts Basics Mini-Course!

Vitamin K is a fat-soluble nutrient that helps our bodies make blood clots to stop bleeding. Adults and older children get vitamin K from foods like leafy greens, meat, dairy and eggs. But babies have very little vitamin K in their bodies at birth, putting them at risk for dangerous bleeding problems. Many infant seats allow for installation without a base. Some infant seats are sold without a base. A car seat base may add to the convenience of your installation, but it isn't there to make your car seat safer. If your car seat manual has instructions for installation without the base, it is absolutely safe to install your seat this way.
