About eight miles past , Palapala Hoʻomau Church feels like the kind of place you find only when you keep going. The road leads to a small historic church, ocean cliffs, peaceful grounds, and one of Maui’s most talked-about gravesites. , the famed aviator who crossed the Atlantic solo in 1927, later lived in Kīpahulu and chose to be buried here after his death in 1974.

Huialoha Church on the coast, a small white sanctuary facing a huge blue horizon. Built in the mid 1800s by hand, stones carried from the shore and coral baked in an imu for mortar. Quiet lawn, ringing bell, ocean and palms for company.
