June Marine Corps History

June carries stories of courage and sacrifice that shaped the legacy of the United States Marine Corps, from the birth of Chesty Puller to the hard-won victory at Belleau Wood. This month we remember:

• 10 June 1898 – Marines land at Guantanamo Bay; flag raised at Camp McCalla
• 12 June 1961 – Flag ordered to fly continuously at the Marine Corps War Memorial
• 15 June 1944 – V Amphibious Corps assaults Saipan
• 20 June 1993 – 24th MEU returns to Somalia for UN support
• 25 June 1950 – Outbreak of the Korean War
• 25 June 1966 – Operation Jay begins near Hue
• 26 June 1898 – Birth of Lewis “Chesty” Puller, the most decorated Marine in history
• 26 June 1918 – Belleau Wood secured; renamed Bois de la Brigade de Marine

From the mist of Belleau Wood to the beaches of Saipan and the frozen hills of Korea, Marines have stood firm, proving time and again that courage and commitment endure through every generation.

There is something truly special about the way a Marine mother shows up.

Laura does not live here in Michigan, and she isn’t part of our local community or the work we do. But distance has never once stopped her from standing with the Detroit Area Marines Foundation.

Year after year, Laura gives her support, her time, and her heart. As a small‑business owner of Lulu Liquor Cakes she pours herself into her craft and still finds room to lift up a veteran nonprofit states away. That kind of loyalty is rare, and her generosity is deeply felt.

If you’d like to show her some support in return, here are a few simple ways:

Today, we pause to honor the brave service members who gave their lives in defense of our nation. Their sacrifice is the foundation of the freedoms we cherish, and their legacy lives on in the families, communities, and service members who carry their memory forward.

Memorial Day began as Decoration Day in 1868, when Americans first placed flowers on the graves of Civil War soldiers. Over time, it grew to honor all who have fallen in service to our country. Each year, we continue this tradition gathering in remembrance, lowering our flags, and observing a moment of silence at 3:00 p.m. to reflect on their courage and commitment.

As the Detroit Area Marines Foundation, we stand united in gratitude remembering the fallen, supporting Gold Star families, and reaffirming our promise to never forget. Their courage reminds us that freedom is not free; it is earned through sacrifice, love of country, and devotion to one another.

We honor them today. We remember them always.

Michigan is home to a strong, resilient community built on hard work, loyalty, and determination. For our military families, those values aren’t just ideals they’re a way of life. Every deployment, every homecoming, every sacrifice made behind the scenes reflects the quiet strength that keeps our communities moving forward.

The Detroit Area Marines Foundation is proud to honor that strength. We’re offering two $1,000 Military Honor Scholarships for the spouses and dependents of service members because your dedication deserves opportunity. Whether your next step is college or trade school, we believe in investing in your future and the future of Michigan.

Applications close July 1, 2026
If you know a Michigan student who could benefit from this support, please share this with them. Together, we lift up the families who stand behind our service members and veterans every single day.

Armed Forces Day — May 16, 2026

Today, we honor the men and women currently serving across all six branches of the United States military — Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard.

Established in 1949, Armed Forces Day was created to unite the services under one Department of Defense and remind Americans that our strength lies in unity.
It’s a day to pause, reflect, and give thanks to those who stand ready — at home and abroad — to defend our freedoms.

From the Detroit Area Marines Foundation, we proudly salute every Service Member who wears the uniform.
Your courage, commitment, and sacrifice inspire us all.
