"To those who remember, Judge Robert B. Helfrich is held in high regard for his service as prosecuting attorney for the 1998 Vernon Dahmer trials. Upon his appointment to the bench, he donated his records of the trial to USM Special Collections for the research of current and future generations. His passing is a loss to the community."

~Lorraine Stuart, head of Special Collections

PS - Oddly enough, our Item of the Month is a photo from his collection!

Helfrich is credited with starting one of Mississippi’s first drug courts, as well as the state’s first veterans court, according to sources.

Each month, University Libraries Special Collections highlights an item from its collections. This month, the featured item is a photograph from the Dahmer trial showing damage from the deadly attack on Vernon Dahmer's family and property in 1966.

The photograph is part of the Robert B. Helfrich papers. Helfrich was the Assistant District Attorney in the 1998 Vernon Dahmer murder trial.

This Item of the Month was written by Payshence Maddox, a forensic criminal justice major in the HON 303 seminar held in the fall of 2024 focusing on archives and special collections.
